That's just a big, long-winded personal problem, and not a definition. I read your thread - it's what triggered me to become curious as to the term carebear and where it does and does not apply.

A carebear is anyone who demands and/or expects to have no risk for their reward or consequences for their actions. PvPers can be as much a carebear as a high sec bear.

THANK you. NOW we're getting somewhere. Does anyone else have something intelligent to offer like this guy?

EDIT: Rocket science is actually really easy, these days. That figure of speech is so outdated - now quantum and particle physics, cosmology, and biochemistry.... that's real science. Rocket science is mostly just a lot of maths.

Ah the old shout until you hear the answer you want tactic.

And here I thought you wanted opinions.

I'm looking for an answer that makes sense. This makes sense. It's not a personal attack, it's a simple, non-biased definition that applies and suits the term "carebear". It's not the answer I wanted, it's the answer that makes sense. I've already determined that the term "carebear" itself is a subjective pejorative, and I disagree with its usage being applied to anyone, but I just want to know to WHO it applies when used.

carebear = everyone who looks for easy kills agains mainly new players and call that PVP
carebear = all gate campers waiting for a missioner to blow up and call that PVP
carebear = anyone who whine about cloaky's in low/nulls for their PVP
carebear = every Jita spam/scammer

etc..........

Sorry OP but it is obvious that you are looking for affirmation, not a discussion.

Maybe there should be a General Affirmation forum?

These playstyles reflect on people that don't care at all. Looking for noobs to kill is not something that someone who "cares" would do. And do scammers really care that much if they're doing what they're doing?

I think I'm getting it now, though. Who the carebears are.

Except that anyone who participates in the Eve market engages in market PvP. Which makes 99.999+% of Eve players non-carebears.

We both knows he means PvP ship-to-ship combat - let's not fiddle with semantics here.

Err..., why are we assuming that? Eve has ship combat, empire building, a competitive market, high-sec Incursion PvP focuses on "winning" over shooting other players, Hulkageddon combined market PvP with suicide ganking, etc..

Ship-to-ship combat is a limited subset of PvP in Eve, so why limit the definition of carebear?

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.

My account is roughly six months old. I've only been on the forums for the last month, and it's the first time I've seen the term used. There are certain things that make sense about it, but I'm looking for clarity of definition, not affirmation. You can call it as obvious as you want to, but unless you have something better than your circumstantial opinion, then I would suggest that it is just your own bias that doesn't want to admit that the term might actually apply to your own playstyle.

Let me make it clear - I avoid PvP. For the moment. I'm getting my skills up. I'm still under 10mil SP. I'm still learning the game. Does that make me a carebear cuz I won't PvP for the moment? Maybe - I don't care much for the term, but if it applies then it applies, and I'm not about to cry over it. I've been forced to defend myself a few times in PvP, only once successfully but my assailant got away and I didn't get a chance to finish him. I risk low and nulsec frequently running contracts and mining rare ores. Most of the time, I get out - I've learned how to be sneaky about it now, and don't get killed as often as I used to.

I don't know if that makes me a carebear, and I don't care if it does. If someone wants to call me a carebear, whether it applies or not, then I might suggest it is a personal problem that requires them to find something pejorative to call me to make them feel better about their own playstyle. I'm not here to affirm, I'm here to clarify the definition. Make sense?

We're assuming that because we both know that's what he means. If he'd written instead "players that avoid combat with other players," would that have been better? Because that's how I understood it. And that's what makes the most logical sense given the simplicity of his comment.

A carebear is anyone who thinks that they don't affect other players in a game like EVE, and because they have this conviction that they're "not hurting anyone" believe that no one should be allowed to affect them using the tools in the sandbox (more specifically combat tools). Carebears may be okay with market PvP because the losses generally sting less and are less abrupt. Carebears think players who use combat tools against unwilling players are bullies and that players should be completely safe unless they're willing to engage in combat.

Which is basically a long-form of "carebear = anyone who actively avoids PVP". This makes sense, and I understand that. Thanks.

Carebear: "Why do you hate me so much?"

Me: "Sigh...Do I need a super-good reason?"

Carebear: "Yes!!!"

"Well, I need an enemy, and the best way to wage war is to demonize your enemy."

Carebear: "Why don't you go to nullsec where people are willing to be your enemy?"

Me: "Well then who's gonna be your enemy?"

Carebear: "Well, we just won't have one."

Me: "Oh, that won't do."

Well, I actively avoid PvP when I'm doing PvE ****; it's how you make money. The difference is that if someone ganks me I blame myself and try to figure out how not to get blown up; a carebear would blame the aggressor and continue doing things in the exact same manner. I also occasionally go out on roams and get blown up, which a carebear would never do.

Some people pretend they don't exist because they cannot be defined.

Others attribute the term to anyone doing something different to them.

A carebear is an attitude and not an action or a person. This is why mining/missions/falcon alts/station sniper/orca dockers/whatever does not magically mean carebear.

What separates a carebear attitude from a reasonable person taking precautions is the belief that you are entitled to "your activity right now". A reasonable person understands its environment and adapts to it while a carebear demands the environment bends to his ideal formed from ignorance, laziness and misinformation.

That, I think, is the bottom line, isn't it? Attitude. That makes the most sense, too.

To me there are 2 definitions of carebear: a dictionary definition is one who wishes to engage in pve/industry activities with no inclination towards pvp whatsoever. There are many of these in EVE Online. They are in corporations and alliances they are in GSF and the CFC and they build things and farm their isk to whatever ends pleases them.

The other type of EVE Online carebear is one who wishes to play a massive multiplayer online game as a solo entity, expecting and feeling entitled to go about their pve activities with no interaction or interference from other players whatsoever. They make one man corporations as tax shelters and have no inclination to join a real one.

The latter type of carebear is most visible on EVE-O as vehemently protesting anything that may impinge upon their solo pve play. The first type of carebear realizes that this is a dynamic game world, constantly changing and shifting as often as the political winds and simply adjusts their gameplay accordingly.

I define carebearism for myself as, I do as I please how I please and when I please, I spent my time in the military I took orders and in life I have a boss and rules and regulations, laws and limitations in life, I'll be damned if I come here just to join someone's ideal of what I should or shouldn't do, THAT my friends is my definition of a carebear who don't want to be bothered with a boob who wants me to rub his epeen.

[EDIT] Ohp! Scratch that, it seems that ISD Type40 felt the thread quickly descended into a series of rants/trolls, and I must respect his judgement.

Just a term like noob, that has been used to death in this game to describe everyone who plays.
