I present... THE SENSOR DECOY!

I was playing some SOSE (I know, a game other then EVE, the horror!), and one of the ships on there has a holographic projector that creates a copy of the host ship. My suggestion is something similar.

What if we had a module that could be mounted on any ship, and functions like a probe launcher? It would fire off decoy drones when activated that to another player would appear to be an exact replica of the ship.

-Decoys would have a very large signature radius, making them easy to target, even for larger ships.
-They would be very weak, making them easy to destroy.
-There would have to be a limited number that could fit in the launcher.
-They would have to have a long reload/firing time so they can't be spammed.

Example One: I'm sitting in a ice belt mining in my Skiff. Suddenly, a red appears on local. Knowing I won't be able to get out in time, I deploy my sensor decoy's. The red warps in on top of me, and see's two Skiff's. He tackles one, the sensor decoy, and I manage to escape. This would give me a 50% chance of getting away. Obviously, this would be of no benefit to bots or afk miners.

Example Two: A small roving gang is cruising through alliance. They are boxed in a pipeline and surrounded. They begin deploying sensor decoys and and try to run the blockade. While still suffering losses, they manage to get out with some of the gang because the enemy ships were targeting the decoys.

As a community, what are your thoughts on this? If you find this idea interesting, what would you do different or change?

What will happen in big fleet battles, when that is possible?

Fistly you're better posting this in the Features & Ideas Discussion section of the forums.

Second while this might sound like a neat idea in the situations you described now imagine a 1000+ fleet batter where everyone activated one of these... Pretty sure adding that many new ships to the field is going to kill the system.

It's an interesting idea but I think it's a little too extreme, maybe a version where it launches a probe which comes up as a ship on scanner but is only a probe on grid.

Honestly, i don't know if that will affect TiDi or not, as it's not adding more clients to the server load, but it is adding more content to be rendered. Anyway, just an idea I had, and thought i'd throw it out to the wolves. Do with it as you will Big smile

couldn't warp out in one of the fastest aligning mining ships in the game?

pay more attention and be less afk is the solution, not adding extra modules to the game.

honestly, the time between warping from a gate to you is longer than your align time in a skiff. not to mention he'll be on your local list before he has even finished loading on to the grid in your system.

@ Dave Stark - Seriously? Do you really need to troll? It was an example. I've never even lost a mining ship. In the future, please refrain from posting unless you have something useful to add.

its an interesting idea, however, as stated before, it sounds good in small gang warfare (which is nearly gone now, each fight now is pretty much just "ohh noes were doomed its 5 guys, ohh wait, nevermind we got supercap support!/its ok, we got another 30 guys behind us" so when your taking lets say a 30 man gang, each of them having a sensor decoy thingamagig then you will double the fleet to 60 people on grid (somewhat) although it might be a somewhat decent counter to ECM and confusing to the enemy FC's as they will call out primaries and the hologram gets targeted instead >.< i got mixed feelings about this idea, however it will depend on how well the server can handle the load

This is an interesting idea...

--- How long do you think they should last?

Similar ideas have been proposed before... although they usually are in the form of anchorable items (like mobile warp disruptors) that you setup prior to the engagement, rather than on the fly launching... I like the "on-the-fly" Launching... as it provides a lot of interesting on-the-fly uses...

Decoy Ship
Configurable, Anchorable Decoy Ships
Intel Decoys
Decoy Ship

The General idea of those threads is:
Quote:
A Decoy Ship

An Anchorable object that mimics a player's ship. Once successfully deployed, it appears on everyone's overview & scan like a normal ship with static attributes that include a pilot name, ship type, and ship name. If easier, have it straight up mimic the ship & player that anchored it. If possible, allow a user-input ship type and pilot name of which to mimic.

  • Give it a short anchor time (1-5 minutes).
  • Leave it single use.... once deployed, it lasts for several hours or until destroyed. (A Day or week isn't necessarily unreasonable, but it should be short enough to not cluttering up space).
  • Keep it reasonably cost for an expendable item (1-10m depending on how long it lasts)
  • [*] Give it static HP (2-10k or some smallish number) and static Signal strength (for easy scanning).
