*****TL;DR Pod me? Please?*****

I’ve been playing EVE for 4 months and I just keep feeling like I'm missing something.

Now obviously I’m missing out on the corporate dynamic, as you can tell by my only character spending the whole time in an NPC corp. Don’t feel like I have enough time/skills/talent to play with the big boys in the real corp!

You'd be surprised how tolerant the "big boys in the real corps" are with respect to this. As long as you're not too stubborn to learn from your mistakes and you're entertaining or interesting in corp chat/forums, then you'll usually get by.

And after a while, you'll be surprised how much game knowledge and operational skill you can pick up, even if you're not playing 14 hours a day. And a little bit of game knowledge can take you a surprisingly long way in EVE. In my own case I am, frankly, mediocre at best at PvP, but here I am, in a "big boy" alliance, with hangars stuffed full of pimpmobiles and enough ISK in my wallet. Because I made sure to learn what not to do in day to day existence, and just didn't do all the much stupid stuff that cost me (or the corp).

In fact as far as PvP skills go, well you know what? Learn the interface, do what the FC tells you when he tells you to do it, only broadcast for reps when you're supposed to, and don't cry when you lose a ship: merely by doing this you're in the top quartile of fleet members as far as he's concerned.

Just be up front with the corp representative you speak to about your available play schedule. I think you'll find that your situation is more typical than you think.

I guess the tl;dr is: the hill isn't as high as it looks.
