I was reading this https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=167132&find=unread and thought, one way or another, it would be cool if stars did something... We've got planetary interaction and it seems that it's a huge success. What about stars? Every system has one. Right now they only serve as celestials to warp to, but you can't actually do anything with them.

So aside from the idea of the "Star Jump Drive", which I enjoy, what could a star be used for? Solar energy of some kind? What if we had things orbiting suns? Utilizing them? What if there were some technique of mining their abundant gasses? I want to hear peoples thoughts. The concept is exciting to me, I wonder if it gets anyone else's imagination going...

An orbital platform around a star could possibly pull in gas such as hydrogen isotopes...it would be a nice way to gather fuel components for pos towers, but then you would have the problems of people attacking your gas mining platforms..they could have a reinforced mode of course....

Possibly an ORE ship similar to the Skiff that can harvest the gasses by getting uncomfortably close to the star. You could also add a mechanic that if you get too close to the star, you start taking Thermal/EM damage over time. The ORE ship could be made to resist this damage for a while before having to leave and come back with the occasional Solar Flare that does a chunk of damage to your ship, making you weary of getting too low in your EHP.

We already have the solar harvester model. Using it as an isotope collector sounds great. It should only harvest isotopes though, not other ice products, so that Ice mining doesn't take a too strong kick in the balls.

If the isotope production depends on star color (yes, they have colors in their stats) rather than on location, it could make it a little easier to cope when using a POS tower (or capital jump drive) that requires something else than the local isotopes.

At what rate should it collect isotopes? Enough for a large tower? Enough for several large towers? Should it be limited to 1 per star? Should it be destructable or flippable? How many EHP should it have?

If they have low EHP, they could become a reasonable objective for small gangs. Something that is lacking in 0.0 ATM.

Should they be allowed in high-sec?

Should they collect something else entirely, such as a crucial component for Infantry gear manufacturing?
