What is the safe value of hauling in a freighter?

I hear contrary things like you can carry up to 5 billion safely. Or anything 1 Billion or above is automatic gank.

People just simply gank freighters for the lulz, especially if its a JF?

What is the safest amount to haul before you should stop, to the point you're not worth ganking for profit?

Provided you have a solid hauler, like a bestower or a badger you can safely haul around a few PLEX

No, you gank small haulers and pods for the lulz. Freighters take teamwork and planning.

CCP has no sense of humour.

If the cost in suicided ships is more than what your cargo and salvage are worth then yer unlikely to get ganked. Tornados. Cost about 80 mil a pop and it takes quite a few to drop a capital freighter. Not worth it if yer hauling minerals and ore. Much more worth it if you load up on pt technite and deadspace/officer mods. Then they can pay for their losses with a profit. Freighter ganks are almost never random in highsec.

Haul as much as you want. You can't die if you follow basic rules of eve.

Don't ask about Italics, just tilt your head.

My freighter was ganked and all I was carrying was a civilian mining laser :(

It's less about wealth, more about knowing the space.

The systems being targeted for ganks are chosen for a reason. You can't cross empires without using those systems. They are traffic bottle necks. It's why EVE maps look the way they do from the furthest reaches of Null to Jita. The map was designed around choke points and is played around them.

EVE isn't complex. It's fish in a barrel.

Double-wrap regardless of what you're hauling, encourage other freighter pilots to do the same?

Andski may your sign forever fly high as a mark of shame to the person who cooked that term up. I'd salute you but I might drop my beer.

As a general rule, don't carry enough that makes it profitable to gank, goons have been ganking freighters and there's threads on what it took to gank them, do, stay out of choke points, udema and narjaf, also avoid transiting systems lower then 0.7 if you can.

http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=15064746

this freighter was ganked using the following ships:

3 talos
1 oracle
7 brutix
2 catalyst

lets assume the following (very roughly calculated ! based on hull + T2 weapons + t2 damage mods + t1 damage rigs) prices

4 Tier 3 BC + Fitting: 500m+
7 Tier 1 BC + Fitting: 500m+
2 Cruiser + Fitting: 20m+

thats 1.something billion isk needed to blow up a freighter, you will be able to loot the BC wrecks to get some of the expensive weapons back, there is also some interesting salvage possible, but the price stays at 1.x B

now you have to consider the possible drop, chance is 50/50, but dont forget, the chance is also 50% for each container, that means a freighter with one container full of shinies is more likely to turn into a loss than a freighter with lots of shinies directly in its cargohold (from the gankers perspective). the possible loot is much higher though.

conclusion:

transporting more than 2 billion in a freighter makes you an interresting target for gankers

Exactly just as much as you can afford to lose. If you can't lose anything, don't undock.

Let's not forget that what might be equally, if not more, important is not the nature of tha cargo itself or ship used to carry it, but also where you are going and how you plan to get there. That's not to say what you carry isn't important, but sometimes it's more important to pay attention to your route and destination. Also, for the love of all that is holy, stay the hell off of autopilot. Ether fly your boat or stay docked.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

The correct answer is

√-π

or in other words, you are never safe. Only fly what you can afford to lose and do your best not to lose it.
