In relation to http://themittani.com/features/what-should-ccp-do-about I will attempt to tackle the issue of having the most important game mechanic also one of the least interactive and dullest. (Unless you want to avoid bumpers).

Acquiring materials is at the heart of the game, the fact it gets done means ships can go boom.
Providing easy access to new and casual players must be kept.
A good idea is one where people think they haven't lost out as much as the other side.
I remember when New Eden was a lot more geographical in terms of supply and thus it was a good idea to go roaming in neighbouring regions for the ore/mineral content you couldn't readily get.

The ore spread is skewed in favour of empire being the primary source of low end materials in the volumes that are required to produce cap ships and the like.
mineral compression has been reduced, but is still viable.
Empire dwellers won't move to low or null sec just because they can make more isk per hour.
Empire miners do so because it's the path of least resistance as can be done at the same time as watching tv, watching the kids and or doing chores around the house. It's also a guaranteed income.

So with those notes out of the way I propose the following for discussion;

Make belts more linear dependant on system security. This already exist, but it could be reduced somewhat.

Currently from 0.4 and up in any region it is apparent that all mineral types except Morphite is readily available.

I propose limiting as follows;

1.0 & 0.9 to veldspar only
0.8 the next type only, .7 the next type only
and so on down to 0.5 inclusive.

From 0.4 the availability could be increased to two types of ore, increasing to three or four types at or around .2 until you get all types at 0.0 and below according to true sec status as is current.

For null and low sec regions the base amount of ore should be vastly increased due to the increased mining ability that has been introduced in to the game.

This will enable new and casual players the same ability they have currently.

It will also mean that corporations who mine on a regular basis can't rely on their one and only system and clear the belts.

It also provides the impetus for organised groups to be more mobile in order to reach their required quota of minerals.

Along with increasing the number of gravity sites containing the current asteroid types per constellation will enable organised groups to profit, while the casual players can still play the exact same way even if it was introduced tomorrow.

For null and low sec mining to be considered it has to be worth chewing through the rocks in the first place - increasing the size and availability of low end minerals in null should entice them to be mined.

What do you think? Does this go far enough? Will it increase the importance of probing and being mobile?

Does CCP actually want the status quo that sees vastly superior industrial means be only available in Empire regions? Does CCP want null regions to be self proficient for their inhabitants?

Its time to stand up against the bad empire based CEO telling falsehoods about what new characters can accomplish and pushing them towards an in game experience of drudgery and loneliness keeping them in the shadow of ignorance for at nest their own profit at worse apathy towards all the experiences that Eve has to offer.

I concur it's not mining it's the production slots. Oh and protection required which cant be guaranteed. Between grav sites an static null COULD be self sufficient but why bother when its easier to haul from null and gai income from excess high end so high sec cam continue along.

CCP mostly wants null systems and entities to fight each other. Or they want war down there more then PVE farming and carebearing.

The way ore and materials were spread it made sense with their original valuse, but now with ore values so out of whack it doesn't make much sense. But that stuff is far from self sufficiency and keeps with the war idea. Even the ore values isn't really too big of an issue for the most part, they only play a small part in the game or so.
