Space travel stops when spreadsheets are opened.

Here's a scenario I've been experiencing.

When initiating a remote stargate jump by right-clicking on the stargate name and choosing "jump", I then switch to my spreadsheets-in-space application (currently Libre Office under Windows XP Pro x64). After updating the spreadsheet I switch application focus back to Eve Online to monitor space travel -only to find that my ship has been waiting at the stargate until I switched back to the game. Once application focus is given back to Eve Online, the jump completes.

What's broken with the multi-tasking here?

Edit...
I notice the problem occurring in full-screen mode but not when Eve Online is run in window mode.
