Can't say the french localization would bring a massive sub increase in France, but I'm confident to say that not localizing it is the best way to prevent it from happening. I'm totally cool with not having too much of my fellow countrymen in my Eve though...

Why do Americans hate U and S?

Now, more than ever, we need a dislike button.

English is teaching is mandatory in France, and has been so since possibly the end of WW2. English is also taught in other French speaking countries. All what CCP squandering the meager resources still dedicated to EVE to a French localization would bring us is some people too dumb to have learned basic English. Do we really want those?

French translation would be a waste of time, and I say that as a Frenchman.

Probably because French is one of the most overrated languages worldwide?

I mean, who (except for the french) does speak french really?

English, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, the language they speak in India, Russian are more widely used, german is as well btw. The term "dead-language" isn't that far fetched in my opinion. Especially as alot of French-people I met have a kind of "even if we can speak english (or whatever) we won't because we are so superior". Like all those student exchanges were the students from france only spoke French the whole time instead of the foreign language they came over to learn....go figure.

Anyway, a localized client "French" would make sense if there is a big marketshare to be had in France. But I really hate the thought of even more foreign languages populating eve, because I really want to talk to people and if most of them uses one langugaes its far easier.

Also add to that about 1/3 to 50% of Belgium (counting Brussels) oh and Quebec I suppose.

Seems to me you missed the point... It's not about what language is spoken by players in game or on TS, but about the localisation of the client. If you want to sell a game in France, you'd better have it translated in french since as you mentionned it, french are reluctant to use english even if they know the basics. To reach a larger audience in France (where a big share of the population have a PC with a DSL connection) you have to translate the game, period.

now I don't understand what you mean by "overrated" (probably not what you think it means) and french is far from a dead language as it get new words added constantly, and often those words are english :)

I think this argue is totally stupid my fellow citizen. Language do not bring lamer, if you think that it is really ashame. Each cultures has some flows and brightest qualities.

A game with this quality deserve to respect different cultures. Why not localization with Danish, Greek, Swedish, even mother language of Eve's dev !?

I will not troll about all quote about the french who said by somebody who didn't pay attention to other cultures, If they want to stay on a small corner of the world and denied the diversity of the world, they perfectly can, so be it !

But I think really EVE will be more rich and more immersive with a bigger cultural meltingg pot. This could only achieve with more diversity.

So much hate and so ignorant yet..
Tippia got you an answer but just FYI I'll leave this here :

Average number of French speaking people worldwide : 220 millions (125m as mother tongue)
Average number of German speaking people worldwide : 125 millions

So.. why make a ruckus and judge french people based on your oh so small bad experience.. german got their localised client, french are allowed to ask too.

You would be surprised to know how many french players are playing AND exclusively talking and writing in english.

all they would bring us are people too dumb to not be able to read a contract, or to understand the rules of CONCORDOKKEN. Why would you not want that? Pirate

that is true ; there are way more people speaking french that german, while they have their eve localization.
people forgot canada on the countries with french speaking people btw.

BUT germans are way more into videogames than french, on any MMO i tried, there were always more servers for german, way more.

also english is not mandatory in france. we learn 2 european language on middle - high school, but nothing say english must be on them. in fact almost everyone will take it, cause we need it, but we are not forced to

but the real problem is that french are not known for being good at foreign language... getting a bit better with time, but still...

but anyway, i don't get what importance a localization is in EVE...
to translate the agent's missions ? who read them anyway ? not like you need to.
the overview ? of course not. the name of the ships ? oh god no.
i remember there were a french tutorial long ago in the game. that would be useful, if you are careful with tranduction ("ovierview" was translated for example, ridiculous...), but no need to do more.

the real issue with french people is that, as some have difficulties on english, they have it hard to integrate on english speaking alliance.
but it's not a localization that would change things, as there is not enough of us playing EVE to be independant... well yes TCF existed, but from what i read the end was really terrible... and from what i saw, some corp still hold grudge against each others from this time... and all the tentative to recreate a french nullsec alliance failed.

hell if you want lobbying about a french translation, there should have a spanish one, there must have lots of people speaking spanish in EVE, and way more speaking it on the world that french.
