Warfare link tricks

As promised, I am starting to post various tournament tricks.

This particular trick has already been "outed", and in fact even "stolen" by Verge of Collapse (kudos on carefully examining our fits), but I don't think everyone was paying attention. Also, there are several variations of the trick, which even people who have seen my Cyclone may find new.

So, gang links - they give you bonuses to useful stuff. If you could, you would bring all the links to the match, but you can only fit so many (they need a lot of PG/CPU), and you can only use so many at the same time (unless you fit Command Processors which need even more fitting resources, and waste valuable midslots). But who said you have to have them all active at all times!? A Hurricane, for example, comfortably fits two warfare links (say, rapid deployment and shield harmonizing), and can switch between them as the fight dictates (first skirmish to quickly get into close range, and then siege to tank incoming damage).

An experienced setup-creator will, at this point, be thinking - but what about the mindlink?! Without the corresponding mindlink, the warfare link's bonuses are much weaker. Well, that's true, and sometimes you have to live with weaker bonuses, which are still better than no bonuses at all, right? But give it a little bit more thought - who said you can only have one mindlink plugged in during the entire fight?! Now we're really getting there! You can put a few mindlinks in your cargo and unplug/plug them in as necessary. This requires some dexterity, but can be mastered with a bit of practice. Of course it will cost you, especially with the prices of mindlinks nowadays, but if it wins you the fight, it's well worth it.

But the rabbit hole goes even deeper.

What if the ship doesn't have enough fitting resources to fit all the links you want? Tough luck, eh? Not necessarily. Recall that you can offline and online modules in space. You fit both (or more??) links, with the one(s) you don't expect to be using immediately, offline. Then, when the time comes to switch, you turn off the active one, turn it offline, and turn the other one online and activate it. Unfortunately, onlining a module in space requires that your ship has 95% of its cap, which makes this trick only useful in 2 main cases: on ships that have a cap booster (or, although riskier, can be fed cap by another ship) and for links you only expect to switch to once, before the fight starts. The latter is particularly and extremely useful in the case of the Sensor Integrity warfare link. All you need to significantly improve your chances against an ECM team is an offline Sensor Integrity link on one of your BCs, and an Information Warfare Mindlink in its cargohold. If you land in the arena and see an ECM team, you have plenty of time and cap to online your +42% sensor strength bonus. Awesome, huh?

P.S. The trick with the mindlink in the cargohold, although obvious in hindsight, was invented not by me, but by Quorthon Seth.

P.P.S. I'm well aware of the irony of losing the last alliance tournament to an ECM team after having come up with this trick.

There you go, I was wondering when Faffy's "Whining 5", "Apologist 5" and "Sandy Vagina 5" were getting activated.

I don't post very often. But you should be aware you are embarassing your alliance with your posting. Bring your best in the next tournament and keep your excuses and accusations to yourself.

Wow, you know you are talking to a full-on r****d when you compliment them and they jump at your throat. The mind boggles.

My random in game skirmish linking loki has an offline harmonizer on it which I online in place of sig radius from time to time. Are you really claiming to have invented leaving modules offline when you run out of fitting?

I heard a rumour that faffywaffy was encouraged to make these threads after realising that Apple had tried to patent a rectangle with rounded corners.

However I am really looking forward to his next wikileak of secret tricks. Maybe the next one is about having different types of ammo in your cargo and actually being able to change how your guns perform by switching it out during a match.

Obviously I'm not the first to ever have offline modules on TQ, but as far as I know I was the first to use them like that in a tournament setting. Probably some of the better team-captains know this trick, but I'm sure many others did not.

Our apologies.

Need to brush up on your reading comprehension (or more likely lose your entirely self-inflicted belief that I am somehow deeply upset and hurt about losing a match to you) . It was in double quotes, and clearly explained that you did it by looking at the fit of my lost cyclone, which is perfectly legitimate. An unbiased reading should have not made you think I was insulting you.

While I don't understand why FaffyWaffy is publishing these "tricks-of-the-trade" I equally don't understand why people are fighting about it.

It seems to me for a team like Darkside. which usually wins through control they should incorporate the tricks into their arsenal and try to keep the tricks quiet for the small edge that it gives them.

And of course he could just be pimping out his theorycrafting services. Who knows.

Whether what I wrote is true or not, I was not accusing you of anything unbecoming, so your response was completely unwarranted.

VoC jump at my every post, seemingly because they think I hate them, or have some grudge towards them. I'm not sure what it is, but they invented it out of thin air.

Other team captains who already knew this trick understandably don't want everyone to know it.

Mostly that, and maybe the satisfaction if someone actually uses these tricks.

I like Faffy's post - he's explained some useful info for anybody doing the tournament for the first time.

We had offline links pretty early in testing so It is quite funny to mention us "stealing" his trick - I guess a bit of egomania is not a crime - but he is right of course in saying that we looked at Darkside's fits carefully after our prelim match. If you don't do that you're making the mistake of thinking your fits are always best.

Listen I was trying to be nice but TEST was using offline links way before either of you.

You can both suck a bag of dicks.
