Large Fleet fights cause slideshow lag on a computer that it shouldn't?

Today while fighting in 1V- my computer had extreme trouble rendering the battlefield. In space and in smaller gang (30 and below) fights I never drop below 100+ FPS with all details maxed out. Today I couldn't get above 10 FPS with everything turned as low as possible.

Hardware specs are as follows:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 x 2 SLI Drivers #9.18.13.697
16GB Ram
Running off a Crucial C4 SSD
ASUS P8P67 Delux Mobo

Also suffer from sever FPS droppage when GPU Particles are on and missile are fired.

Any insight would be awesome!

Such is the nature of EVE. GPU particles are extremely resource hoggy so that's normal. As for the rest of it how large was this large fleet fight? 100? 200? more?

There were 1000+ ships with 150 or so supers on the field. This usually happens with 100+ on the field. With all the videos out there of the fights running smoothly I figured my PC might just be doing something a little funky, because it is certainly possible to run these fights at a smooth frame rate.

Please forgive my assumptions...

W/O seeing those reference videos, it might be the case where the captured video is sped up slightly giving the impression of better frame rates OR that the person capturing the video has finely tuned his EVE client configuration for optimal FPS performance when capturing that video.

The fight that you describe is a large one and all bets are off when it comes to those numbers and EVE client - server performance. Sometimes, the client behaves shockingly well with such numbers. Sometimes things go to utter crap. It may even be the case that the server node supporting the fight was having trouble serving up data to your client, creating the perception that your computer was performing poorly.

tl;dr - test the low-quality graphics settings across several large-scale battles to see if the poor FPS performance is consistent; it might be EVE and a server-side problem completely unrelated to your local workstation's config.
