The best way for a new player to learn about the varied and sundry dangers of EVE is to learn from other people.
Agreed, but that can be done without being in a player corp.

For you, perhaps. For others it's a pain in the arse.

Yep. Why would I want to join a corp where I can get wardecced, shot at by my so-called "mates" and have all the hassle of having to turn out for corp ops, just to get back-up that CONCORD gives me for free?

I ain't that stupid.

Edit: Besides, the reference was to "the social aspect" and I don't quite see how battle cruiser back-up qualifies.

While you may feel this way (and there's nothing wrong with it, Eve is a sandbox game, play however the hell you want), the vast majority of people in EvE enjoy social interaction and are part of a corp. A corp is a great environment for new players to learn in - especially one dedicated to helping newer players like Eve Uni or RvB.

Your choice of corp was rubbish if they were ganking you. Use your common sense man. The "battlecruiser backup" bit was an analogy for all things support related. With an adult group of players you don't need any of the hassle you mentioned. One of the most important parts of the game for a new player is the way game skills are presented to them. You can read all the guides in the world solo, the player with actual people teaching him is going to learn much faster and more completely than you. Not joining at least a shared chat with older players WILL gimp your learning curve.

I do play just the way I want. What I object to is people telling me I WILL enjoy it more if I play differently, when they know absolutely nothing about me. The "vast majority" of people do not enjoy the social action and are not part of any corp. A recent survey showed that the majority play solo.

I've never been in a corp, but I've seen plenty of accounts from people who have and I've read all the info of what being in a corp involves. My comments, and my decision never to join a player corp, are the result of weighing up the pros and cons of corp membership. There's plenty of evidence in these forums that supposedly "adult" players indulge in exactly the sort of hassle I mentioned. In any case, even if that is comparatively rare, the other disadvantages of corp membership are omnipresent and well documented.

You obviously missed this bit:

There's nothing wrong with suggesting to new players that they might learn faster and/or enjoy the game more if they join a corp. What is inexcusable is to make assertions that they WILL do so, as if it's some sort of undeniable fact, and that there's no other way of learning or enjoying the game. It also takes no account of the fact that there are those of us who find the idea of playing a video game as part of a semi-permanent team a totally alien concept. If I want to socialise I'll go down to the pub and have a drink and a chat with RL friends.

Making sweeping statements about what the "vast majority" of players do or think in a game with 300,000+ players is even less justifiable. There's absolutely no way any one individual can be in a position to know everyone else's habits and opinions.

Lots of stuff in these forums.

Let's not get into a silly spat over this. If you truly believed that personal coaching in a corp is the only way to learn EVE you wouldn't make all your useful contributions to these forums. You talk a great deal of sense and explain things in a easy to follow manner. I make a point of reading anything you have to say about items that interest me.

All I'm saying here is that we're all different and nobody has the knowledge to say what will or will not suit any individual player.

hey guys,

i was in 0.8 mining with my secure containers when they where all looted and stolen by another player which will remain nameless. I understand the 0.7 sec requirement to ancor but why doesnt the dam password work when someone else trys to loot??? Is there a way i can report it and make his rating drop so i can put a bount on his head?? what can i do? my current superduper newb mining setup is a iteron III drops containers and my catylist mines with 3x miner II, then iteron comes and empties. please help!

Is there something i can do about the player?

what is a more secure way to mine as a poor newb?

thanks in advance.

The password only works when the can is anchored. Since you cannot anchor in that system people can steal stuff from it. I used to do this in high sec all the time when i was living there and can flipping people regularly. Interestingly you do not get agro for stealing the entire container but will get agro for just stealing what is inside the can.

The solution to your problem? Move to a .7 or lower so you can anchor your can. I would suggest getting a giant secured container which will fill up slower and let you mine longer.
