If you're mining for profit, you don't want to use a ship that's going to get blown up the easiest.

He said it's semi-afk, which precludes can mining, and is what the mack is now designed for.

The way he described it, if you would actually bother to read the thread, sounds like he's going to be mining in the background while doing something else.

i wouldn't mine ice in hi-sec in an exhumer or retriever, use a max tanked procurer. especially if you plan on mining ice in gallente systems. but don't take my word for it, look up eve killboard stats on the system you plan to mine in and see what's been exploded in the last few weeks. there seems to be a trend...

Use the ship that meets the style of mining you're going to be doing and willing to lose. AFK/Semi-AFK is obviously the Retriever for AFK or Mackinaw for semi-AFK / idle mining. If you're afraid of losing alot of isk or plan to AFK mine then use the Retriever. If you're going to be semi-afk / idle mining and not worried about losing an expensive ship use a Mackinaw. If you're mining in a fleet / have coms and are not AFK use a hulk.

Don't waste yield for tank on a Mackinaw, its just silly. You're better off mining in a Retriever for max yield (which will yield MORE then a Mackinaw with non-yield modules) but 150M isk cheaper. Let me say that again because its important; If you do not have MAX yield setup on a Mackinaw for mining, a Retriever beats it.

Here are the numbers including ship costs and yields per hour. All data pulled from EFT, All V to stats, no implants or boosts.

Hulk (190,100,000 isk)
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • medium ice harvester accelerator

  • 49,000 m3/hour

    Retriever (36,175,000 Isk)
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • medium ice harvester accelerator

  • 43,000 m3/hour

    Mackinaw (188,175,000 Isk)
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • medium ice harvester accelerator

  • 45,000 m3/hour

Mackinaw setup for for tank (damage control in low slot)
41,000 m3/hour (NOTE this is 2 less then a retriever).

    procurer (20,675,000)
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester II
  • ice harvester upgrade II
  • medium ice harvester accelerator

  • 39,000 m3/hour

You don't know what you're talking about. When you take into consideration the time lost hauling jetcans (swapping ships, additional back//forth to station) you actually lose about 2 cycles of ice mining per hour (naturally it can be more or less), which in turns means less ice / hour compared to the Mackinaw. In fact assuming 1 minute align, travel, dock, undock times for a total of 4 minutes of additional time lost flying a hulk and swapping to a standard indy ship a Hulks yield is equal to a Retriever, minus the need to jet can, to have to manually remove ice from your ore hold, or losses from can flippers, or players bumping you from your can.

    So yeah, you're wrong.
