Regarding the pictures throughout the post, i started off using imgur, but it stopped working for me, so i switched to tinypic - sorry for the inconsistency.

Briefly, before i get to the main post, a mention of how to look for active Fleets you are eligible to join using the Fleet Finder feature - in the far upper left hand corner of the screen, click the E in the Neocom above your Character Portrait, mouseover Social, and select Fleet Finder from the dropdown.

http://i.imgur.com/yI0X1.png

Familiarize yourself with how it works and consider dragging its icon to the main part of the Neocom for faster access in the future - it is an important tool and pretty self-explanatory.

Be aware, however, that you will need to click the Find Fleets button in the Find Fleets Tab to refresh the list - it does not refresh automatically.

A few notes about Fleets - specifically, etiquette.

#1 Rule of Fleets: follow the FC's orders, or find a new Fleet.

Along these lines, do not talk over FC on Comms unless it is critical intel - use your best judgement as to what qualifies as sufficiently critical, and don't be chagrined if you make a mistake on that front - just remember for next time.

#2 Rule of Fleets: do not engage unless you are ordered to.

Along those lines is to be aware of potential friendly Outlaws - hopefully they are set to Good or Excellant Standing and you have your overview properly sorted as outlined below, but if not, you need to know that if you engage someone who is not called, and it was a bad move, they will probably pop you for your mistake, and be completely justified in doing so.

Now on to Overview stuff.

You can map a keyboard shortcut to open your Overview Settings Window even while Docked.

To do this, hit esc in game, go to the Shortcuts tab at the top of the esc menu, then select the Windows sub-tab.

From there, scroll down to the Open Overview Settings entry and make a shortcut for it.

Now, use the shortcut you just setup to open Overview Settings.

Go to the Appearance tab.

In both the Colortag and Backround sub-tabs, use dragging and dropping to prioritize what something will show as (higher on the list is higher priority).

It is !important! to have this list sorted, because some people may match multiple criteria.

For instance, a friendly Militia Member may also have -5 or lower Security Status (aka be a "Pirate").

If "Pilot has a security status below -5" is higher on the priority list than "Pilot is in your militia or allied with your militia" they will show up as a Pirate and seem like a valid target to engage, even tho they are actually a friendly militia member - this often leads to friendly fire situations, which are bad for all involved.

Here is how i personally have the priority order sorted, starting with top/highest priority first: Excellant/Good Standing, both At War possibilities, Fleet, Corp, Alliance, Militia, Ally in War, -5 or lower Sec, Criminal, Suspect, Limited Engagement, Terrible/Bad Standing, Activateable Kill Right, 0 or lower Sec, Bounty, Agent, Neutral/No Standing.

Basically, keep "friendly" icons (Corp/Militia/High Standings/etc) sorted above hostile/potentially hostile ones (Pirate/Criminal/Suspect/etc) on the priority list.

I also advise adding a "Velocity" column to the Overview to keep you informed on how fast things are moving by going to Overview Settings>Columns>check the Velocity checkbox.

Other columns can also be handy - experiment a bit to see if any others are useful for you.

Is your overview cluttered with friendlies?

Are you afraid you might misclick and target one someday by accident?

If you answered "yes" to either or both of those questions, consider removing them from that Overview Tab (more on Overview Tabs later).

To do this, go to Overview Settings>Filters>States and uncheck these 7 boxes: Good/Excellant Standing, Ally in War, Alliance, Corp, Fleet, and Militia.

I don't reccomend unchecking any other boxes tho - the logic of States isn't always that...... logical, if you ask me.

I ran out of space in this Post, so i'm going to have to split it, using my next post in this thread for the rest of it - post #4 in the Thread, or just take this link, if you prefer:

*Cough* bump *Cough*

Good advice! Regarding tabs I'd only add that its important to have both a tab with friendlies showing as well as one without, and that you can quickly flick between them to check friendly positions or ranges in a large or kiting battle.

Also having seen some screenshots of other pilots, for the love of FSM remove drones from your main pvp overviews and add them to a tab of their own. Trying to prioritise targets by range or select a primary with drones jumping up and down the overview is awkward as hell.

Personal addition:

If your computer/settings can handle it, i suggest turning on Show All Brackets for all Tabs of the Overview - this helps you see where a target warps off to, if you are being yellow/redboxed by something not shown on the current Overview Tab, and provide some better situational awareness, in general.

To do this, go to Overview Settings>Overview Tabs and select Show All Brackets for each Tab you wish to set that way.

Additions suggested by Mehashi 'Kho:

Take advantage of all 5 available Overview Tabs - to create a new Tab, right click one in the main Overview Window, and select Add Tab.

Use each for a different purpose, and name them appropriately (Overview Settings>Overview Tabs).

Remove Drones from the main Hostiles Tab, and any others you so wish to, by going to Overview Settings>Filters>Types, right clicking "Drones[9]", and clicking Deselect All.

http://i48.tinypic.com/2ywsl7m.png

You can save your current Overview Settings>Filter choices by clicking the icon in the upper left hand corner of the Overview Settings window and clicking Save Current Type Selection As...

If you do remove Drones from most Tabs, you may want to have a whole Tab devoted entirely to Drones.

To do this, make a fresh Tab, go to Overview Settings>Filters>Types, click the Deselect All button at the bottom of the window, then right click "Drones[9]", and click Select All.

Don't forget to save your Filter selections and use Overview Settings>Overview Tabs to name each Tab and select each one's Bracket and Overview Profile.

Addition suggested by Bad Messenger:

As my Sig and Bad Messenger both correctly suggest, it is a good general policy in EVE, or any situation for that matter, to be on your guard and use common sense (which is all too uncommon, these days) - there are many wolves in sheeps' clothing out there.

Most important advice in FW.

I agree with this.

However, after warping offgrid, or at the very least not engaging in the friendly fire fiasco, i would also advise trying to help the person who made the mistake sort their Overview properly (possibly by linking to this Guide) so they can (hopefully) avoid future incident(s). :)

the short version is basically "drag militia above outlaw in the overview settings" ;)

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

Except .. (there is always at least one) .. for all the militia corps/pilots that prey upon their own. Not as bad as it was, but still several who do it cross-militia as many have "blue" as a forced setting for 'allies' due to client not being able to show it natively.

Updated the Guide for Retribution as best i could - main thing i was uncertain about was how to prioritize the new Crimewatch-related Flags in Overview Settings>Appearance>Colortags and Backround.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or corrections are always appreciated. :)

Thank you for the bump, Abyssum.

Zoe, thank you for your input - i quoted it in the 2nd part of the Guide with a few thoughts of my own on that front.
