Hey,

I'm caught up a debate on the Dust forums about whether or not DUST is merely a (good) platform to getting console players into EvE on the PC.

Just for the record, I don't believe this at all, but it has got me to thinking about how EvE players setup.

I am a 37 year old family man (two little ones) thus my house is generally setup around the family rather than around playing the PC and/or the PS3.

My PC moves from the study/spare room to the dining room table, depending on if we have long term guests (like we do currently) and my PS3 is set up on the main TV in the living room.

Therefore, for me to play the PS3, I have to pretty much wait until everyone in the house is sleeping to get the peace and quiet and so as not to disturb any 'Jake the Pirate' that might be showing for the little ones.

This brings me to the conclusion that the likelyhood of dragging a younger audience (assuming ps3 gamers are on average younger) away from their Bedrooms or and agreed PS3 setup onto a PC is going to be extremely difficult.

In other words, I think it's going to be tough for a EvE player to move entirely to the PS3, but even rarer for a PS3 user to move to the PC..... if only for logistical reasons.

So, and to my question, how is your gaming experience setup for EvE? Is it in a separate study that has a PS3 near it, is it sitting on the dining room table with no access to the PS3 etc etc.

Regards

"Jake and the Neverland Pirates" rock.

If that dust game is going to trigger these deep philosophical debates you're probably better off having a few beers on the porch waiting for the lasers on your mack to stop. Blink

I'm pretty much in the same situation. Except I don't have a PS3, but also have to wait until everyone is sleeping. 31 and 2 kids. An the PC is in my daughter's room so I can't really talk just listen in gangs.

It's planned to be moved, the PC that is, to another room soon.

9 kids, keep them in the closet. Wife is chained up in the bedroom/kitchen I built, or as I like to call it, The Bitchen. EVE follows me in the form of a laptop, so I can play Dust wherever the hell I want, as long as it's in the living room.

Disclaimer: I'm a student in a flat with 2 roomies and a gf. No problems here.

There's nothing worse than an EVE player, generally considered to be top of the food chain in the MMO world, that cannot smacktalk with wit and coherency.

Problem with ps3 is it's not really a hardcore gamer system. In other words, they are going to casually move from one game to the next, generally not sticking to any one particular game for years. Maybe sticking to a franchise, but not a single game that carries on from ps1 to ps2 to ps3 and onwards. So maybe DUST may do well in the short term, but for long term it will find it's following in the PC market, niche wise. And maybe not even as a primary game in general, but one of a few games a hardcore gamer will tap into for a short break from their single game fixation most likely being EVE in this case. Talking long term.

With that said, I don't have a console (not counting my ATARI 2600's). I gave up on those years ago, around the time mmo's came around 15 years ago. I have a Nintendo DS about as close to a console. It was a replacement for my pocket pc, but has now been replaced with a nexus 7. But as for where to play, have you tried your back yard? Big smile Laptop will go anywhere, you know? Play hardcore games on the go! I have two that run EVE. Also two PC's and another that can... but best left to collect dust balls. I'm around your age, I just have no use for a pile of conquered console games anymore. Maybe CCP will do something for my android device Pirate

I just play on my PC in my study. I don't own a television as it's not in keeping with the style of my home.

I'm living alone in a small 1-room apartment. Not everyone can play EVE in solitary confinement...

My computer is in the study, with the other half's computer. I don't get to play for long though since the kitchen is the other end of the house. In the middle is the loungeroom with the TV and consoles. Though we have a rule in this house that console games are only ever played standing up (because sitting kills you, don't you know).

I'd describe my set up a little better, but I have to go turn the chops.

My PC is built in a bookcase in the front room connected to the 2 TVs on the walls.
My PS3 is connected to one of the 2 TVs.

In theory I could play both at once but:

(a) im in 'skill change online' mode with eve at the minute so actually playing is too much effort. Stupid war dec un-buff.

(b) Dust is good but its a console shooter and im a PC man. PC men cannot use stupid d-pads to play FPS games as they will always be slower and less accurate than a keyboard and mouse. Always.

Most kids will probably have a PS3 in the bedroom and a laptop to use for PC - possibly a tablet. It is a great way of advertising eve so who knows?

either get a second keyboard and mouse, or a kvm switch and just use the one kb/m. then take up mining. its boring as ****, but it can make you some isk while you play dust. problem solved.

Not owning a television beacuse most of the stuff on it is mindless nonsense, X Factor, Srictly Dancing etc I can understand.

But you seem to be saying that a television would not match your decor.

And I thought I was a bit weird...

This is not a signature.

It's an old house with historical value. A television would just look really out of place and tacky and it's not like I'd watch it. I spend most of my time in the study anyway.
