[contest] Fon Revedhort's contest for best reviews on best PvP movies - the winner gets 2 bil

It's 4 AM and this thread is basically initiated by pretty unrelated discussion at eve-ru.com, but I do hope this won't make it look any less interesting for some.

Anyway, what I'd like to do here is start a contest of epistolary skills based on EVE PvP movies of all times. The interested ones are welcome to write reviews on whatever movies they want, but apparently it's best to pick some EVE classics - fortunately, this forum section has a rich history of its own and there have been quite a lot of great movies of both artistic and educational value behind them. Picking best movies not only shows how PvP comprehension has developed over time, but also may point some newer players to the things they might missed while being potentially interested.

Also, I do believe CCP has gone the wrong way with their Community Spotlight series - none of PvP players has been represented there so far and that's quite astonishing, given how EVE is positioned as PvP game and how much efforts these players have actually spent on making EVE and its PvP more attractive for wider audience. So as a whole that's somewhat my humble attempt to help restoring justice.

Since this is my thread, the contest is run by me and I myself also provide the prizes (yeap, I don't expect people to waste their time for free - otherwise they'd be making movies just like... oh...), I'd like to set some basic rules and guiding lines:

  • imagine you're writing a review on a general movie TV shows you daily; don't make the review neither too short nor too long and revealing, the reader must feel intrigued to a certain point to really want to go watch the stuff you depict;

  • the reviews are to be written on small-scale PvP works, let's say where 1 to 5 ships are present from the author's side; I don't want to promote blobs in any way;

  • movies produced by Fon Revedhort are excluded from this contest for apparent reasons. If you really enjoyed some of my works, feel free to send me your expanded opinion via private channels (from an alt (!) to help me remain unbiased in case you participate in the contest itself) - I might want to use it later for other affairs and thus reward you as well, but at the moment this is not the point and main prizes will remain unaffected;

  • prizes are 2 bil isk for the review I will like most, 1 bil for the second place and 600 mil for the 3rd; I might then introduce additional prizes and also some others might want to contribute - one never knows how it turns out;

  • English isn't my native language and while I'm not that good at it, this in no way should be a limiting factor for you. Besides, people are naturally better at reading and comprehending than at talking or writing themselves. In terms of sheer language, I would be perfectly fine with you creating something on pair with Roosevelt's review on "The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century" (a must-read book, by the way);

  • The contest is run for 2 weeks since the original post.

Finally, I believe this initiative may greatly improve the quality of 'regular' comments and feedback provided on day-to-day basis - something all the players will eventually benefit from.

Good luck!

edit: I gave it a thought and decided to double the prizes.

Great idea. This forum has the serious problem of most pvp videos being moved to the second page only a few days after release and once it is off the first page most people forget its existence. If it wasn't for resources like the eve-wiki pvp video collection I would never have found and watched the vast majority of all the classic pvp videos from years back. So anything that increases awareness of these oft-forgotten classics for all the newer pvpers coming through is a plus in my mind.

I'm not the best writer and am rather busy with study at the moment. But I will see if I can find the time to enter a piece for this competition. Shame though that you are running it, I've always wanted to write a review of The Rocket Wickedness. :P

Wave of Mutilation 2 - by Farjung

Imagine if you will an EVE where Carriers were the largest ships in the game, and Battleships ruled the small scale PVP arenas. A game where there are no tier 3's, no tech 3's, no gang boosting, no hot drops incoming..... a game of pure, raw in your face I'm better than you fights. I present to you a write up of the first, great, Faction Battleship PVP video.

We begin the video with a series of pirate fights with our hero in a Vindicator roaming low sec and fighting outnumbered against various ships and gate guns. It comes into a fight soon against some Dominix that give our Vindi pilot a fight for his life micromanaging the best he can to overcome what were at the time, overpowered Nosferatu's. He does this by utilizing a module that in todays game no longer works in the situations.

Now we get into the meat of the video, we see for the first time in EVE one of the biggest and outnumbered fights in EVE at the time. What makes this fight even more fun is that we then get to see the fight from his corp mates view as the try to overcome the overwhelming odds placed in front of them. The music at this part sets the mood well. Rapid, frantic paced, intense fighting. No overloading here folks, will they make it? Its gonna be close!

You would think that after that fight the video would lose some steam, but it only gets better. We follow the vindi pilot as he tries to change his ways and help others, only to be lured into traps and have to fight both sides. Then we finish the second half of the video with what became the inspiration for my videos. Outnumbered, outgunned, solo action! Your only ally...... sentry guns!

GAME ON BIATCHES!!!

Missiles soar across the screen as our hero runs into the fray to tackle and pound on the nearest targets he can get. He has manually fly around gates / wrecks, all while avoiding tracking on the sniping ships and attempting to manage mods and tackle. Then its gets even more interesting as the fights move to the belts. Still outnumbered but with no safety nets of any kind.

Will he make it this time........!? Not looking good........ omg what just happened!? You'll have to watch it to find out!

I can't compete with the quality of Thriller on anything I do but I can provide some commentary, sort of like those awful clip shows where B-list celebrities are interviewed about sitcoms that were on-air when they weren't even born yet

Kil2 - SEVEN

Kil2 well known for being one of two in the "bringing solo back" Podcast team, Alliance tournament commentator and for his excellent PVP streams has had a long and distinguished career in EvE Online PVP and the Video making scene. But of all the work he has done and video's he has made, none stick out to me more that KIL2_SEVEN.

Filmed in a time long before links and Drake blobs, a time long before EC-300s blotted out the sun and tank creep had dug its claws in further, Kil2 and his comrades at Club Bear released "Seven". A Video that showcased Solo and small gang warfare at its finest. And while today it may be dated, it is always good to look back and give a nod to the past and remember where it all started.

The Video starts with a nice but simple intro that quickly takes us into the first piece of action, kil2 is flying a solo guardian while his four friends fight on gate with battleships against far greater numbers and a titan on grid, the fight while interesting seems out of place in the video, especially considering what comes next!. Probably the most iconic and well known brutix footage featured in any pvp video to date.

The fight starts with KIL2 Jumping through the gate into an enemy gang made up of frigates cruisers and HAC's he proceeds to split them up and demolish them, quite frankly it is a fight that has inspired many PVP videos to date, and showcases the very basics of Solo flying.

While the video is now quite old, it has stood the test of time, with its great soundtrack which is both fun and Quirky and some very innovative tactics which includes a Hull tanked Bait ship this Video is like the Godfather of MyEvE, an all time classic and must see!.

PS: come on Guys, i want to see some great reviews here Cry

This is a short review to three videos that I consider as one big ball of awesomeness. I wish I had more time to do an depths review of these, and some other videos that I love and adore, but I am about to fly abroad very soon (for 6 months traveling) and I cant spare the moments right now. My Eve subscription is already finished- I can't post on these forums anymore, so I try to bring this review through a friend. Its too important of a thread to let die without some action, I think its a noble effort and it needs love. Fon Revedhort you're the man! I'll just say that if I had time I'd also review Kil2's "Seven", Wildcat's "Burning Eve" 4+5, and Prom's "Addiction", which are incredible videos that are forever in my personal Hall of Fame :-) So here's the short review I chose to focus on:

Willington's T1 Cruiser Madness

None of the videos contain gang links, boosters, special implants, special mods (no faction), or even rigs!

Good music, and very high video quality for 2008 when the first two were made, 1440x1080p.

The first of Willington's said videos was called "Two", a.k.a: "The Worse the Better", because he flies such cheap setups, and kills such expensive ones :-)
Evefiles http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0809/two.wmv

This video is something of an intro to his next two videos, which I consider far superior, and still, in 'Two', you see how magnificent a Celestis can be. Battling ships such as the Vagabond, Sleipnir, and in the final fight soloing against a Phobos and an Astarte in a phenomenal display of piloting!

Moving on to Willington's followup video, called "Two 3"
Evefiles http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0811/twothree.wmv

Video starts with a fight of Rupture + Thorax vs Myrmidon + Curse + Sacrilege, already incredible :-) I remember being shocked of how well this pilot manages his AB setups, knowing full well how much cap he has left while being neuted, knowing he has to hold point, knowing when to shut off AB for extra point time vs extra mobility, Willington pushes the very definition of T1 Cruisers to the limit.

Watching the videos, you're just amazed how pilots are quick to engage his Rupture/Vexor/Celestis thinking they're going to score an easy kill, and ending up trying to run for their dear hull lives.

The video moves on to Four Ruptures vs 3 Ravens, Cerebus, Huginn, Hurricane, Rapier and tons of small stuff... Only word for this is BALLS!

I have to point out, the music choice can sometimes become somewhat heavy, not everyone's cup of tea, but hey, fits the bill.

A sight that was frequent in those 0.0 days, seems to have been Willington in his Vexor, killing an Arazu, Ishtar, or various other blingy ships, then loots the field and warps off in structure, as this video proves time and time again... An even more frequent sight would be his Celestis killing Vagas and Rapiers as though they were ibises.

Which leads us to Willington's "Counting Bodies"
Evefiles http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0904/countingbodies.MKV

Already Eve graphics have jumped to the next level, and the video quality continues to be top notch 1600x1000p.

Have you ever seen a Rupture killing 4 Rapiers at the same time? Well you're about to :-) How about a Rupture vs Pilgrim and two Arazus, while engaging with 60% structure?

The videos, as a T1 cruiser series, are nothing short of an astounding landmark in Eve Solo. The piloting probably nears perfection in all aspects of game mechanics, and seeing such remarkable results make the viewer believe that he/she can do the same, and motivates one to do just that.

All hail the king of Ruptures, T1 Cruiser AB madman, The Vexor- Recon Assassin, Willington. My T1 Cruiser power inspiration! o7

Steven Case's "Bustin Makes Me Feel Good" Cool

Steven put this video out over two years ago; ships and ammo might have changed since then, but the amount of raw player skill demonstrated is still incredible to watch.

The music selection is very upbeat and makes you want to rock out watching the video. There's some great hard rock hits from Rob Zombie, Static X, and Disturbed which give me a nostalgic feeling hearing them again. There's not much in the way of variety, but does anyone really watch EVE videos to listen to the music?

The editing is fairly good, the combat moves swiftly enough to keep the viewer interested, and there aren't any unneeded distractions pulling your attention away from the action.

Back when everyone was flying nothing but hurricanes and vagabonds, Steven decides to go against the grain and rolls out with gallente ships like the Taranis, Thorax, and Dominix. Before the introduction of the Talos and T2 ammo buffs, gallente were more or less on the bottom of the food chain during this period. Steven takes this and uses it to his advantage in his fights, since many other players underestimate the potential of these ships, as well as the skill of the pilot. I'm not sure what those guys in Curse were thinking when they engaged a dominix right on station undock in BPK-XK, but I don't think they'll ever try that one twice.

One of the most intense fights in this video pits Steven's Rokh in a 1v1 against a Megathron. The Megathron holds on to armor for dear life as Steven overheats almost his entire middle rack nearly burning out his invuln fields, but thanks to his excellent focus on capacitor and heat management, he pulls through and blaps through the Mega's structure without burning out any of his mods.

What originally drew me to watching this video takes place at 10:13 and continues to the ending. This fight takes place in what was TEST alliance's main system at the time of the recording, OWXT-5 in Deklein. Steven warps to a belt and lands on a ratting maelstrom. The ratter, a member from my corp, cries desperately for help in local and summons a defense fleet to come save him. They arrive in pots and pans a few seconds too late and proceed to be kited and nuked by Steven's nano drake. After wiping the floor with the defense fleet, he proceeds to warp at range to TEST's main station and kite even more defense fleet pots and pans off the undock. It's unfortunate that Steven was so completely concentrated on ranges, targets, his module heat, and align points, that the poor camera work doesn't really do this fight justice. I recall sitting on the undock myself, screaming in comms and in alliance chat trying to get a fleet up to get a warpin on the drake, as I watched a slew of TEST and Goon ships fly straight at this guy and drop one after the other. A line of wrecks littered OWXT station from 50km out to past 200km from the undock. Only after Steven finally burns out his launchers does he make a quick escape. This is one of the greatest fights I ever witnessed myself, and I was absolutely ecstatic that he decided to share it in the video, as I think many other players should be able to experience it as well.

http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_related&kll_id=8328332

Watching this video puts to rest the argument that "all you do in EVE is orbit and push F1 and hope you win". The amount of multitasking and player experience Steven Case shows here is a testament to how difficult EVE PVP really is.

"Hello bombers bar, meat pizza!"

Writing this review of video made by a member of my own corporation may seem biased, (and against the nature of the contest?) but I'd like to think that had anyone else done this video, regardless of their corp, I would have liked it as much as I do, and laughed equally as hard.

I am going to split this review into two parts. The first part I will focus on the incident itself and it's back-story. The second will focus on the video, what happens in it, it's production values and content, and untimely why it is, in my opinion, the greatest EVE video of all time.

At it's most basic, the video depicts an oft used mechanic for killing numerous small objects. Warp to location, smart bomb. In truth, this doesn't take much if any skill at all. But the story surrounding the video is what makes it interesting. "Bomber's Bar" is a loose collection of corps/members who like to fly stealth bombers. Pretty much anyone can freely join via their publicly listed fleets in their chat channel, aptly named "Bombers Bar". Most of these fleets end up camping some gate, and waiitng for an opportinity to bomb. Bookmarks were given out during the fleets and often the same bookmarks were used over and over. Because of this, it was possible for some clever person to exploit it. And what better way to do this than some kind of smart bombing battleship? Which is exactly what happened, much to everyone's delight.

The video itself begins with presentation text (natch), and an absurd and farcical question “FC, can I bring a typhoon?”… we begin to see the object in question (typhoon) entering warp. The audio isn’t dubstep or some terrible Nu Metal bodies hitting floors garbage, but actual audio from the FC of bombers bar while this is happening. The stage is set. As the phoon is warping, operatic music can be heard beneath the FC auditory commands… music very fitting for what is about to happen. The comedic tension is slowly being built up. The video itself is clear, large, crisp. No need to go full screen to read text in order to figure out what is happening.

“That Typhoon’s back” some poor bastard is heard to say as the Typhoon lands amogst the unwitting, cloaked, bombers. “Typhoon man.” Someone says to no one in particular, hoping for an answer as to what if anything they should do next. Panic rising. The smart bombs are activated… damage is being taken by the bombers and the FC is heard to say, “Oh my god. Are you fuckin’ serious?” Chaos ensues. People saying commands out loud and promptly doing nothing as ships begin to detonate on screen.The FC incredulous, confused as to what exactly is taking place, even though he knows full well. “I’m back in station”. The fleet now ruined, the surviors decide to kill the phoon. They lock it up. The Typhoon is scrammed, and just as they begin to fire torpedos at the seemingly trapped Typhoon… off it warps into the distance while the bewildered fleet is left to rage about what just happened. And at the exact moment the moment the confusion and rage is reaching it’s cresendo, people being kicked from fleet, FC screaming accusations, what appears on screen but le monkeyface. The video slowly zooms into le monkeyface while the audio rage continues… and finally cuts to an MS Paint signature playing a song with the lyrics “don’t hate me for body rocking”. Essentially saying, THIS IS EVE. Having the utmost fun possible at your expense, in new and creative ways. **** the butterfly effect. **** your gigantic blob fests. **** your mining. **** your SOV. **** your ISK.

Not sure if I convinced anyone this is the greatest video of all time, nor if I will win any ISK for this monstrosity unleashed upon the internet, but regardless, I had fun writing it. *shrugs*

Review of Prometheus Exenthal’s EVE Online movie „FRIGANK 8

In the very little time I have had pleasure of researching EVE Online movies I have encountered numerous cases of great action, feet tickling close fights, spectacular cases of bravery and honor, great pirating, ridiculous ransoms, coordinated fleets, superb FC’ing and whatever else you would expect from a movie made in such ludicrous game.

FRIGANK 8 offers something more. Author has spent the time to make viewer’s experience pleasing not only for the great action, but also pleasing for the eye. It’s a rare cinematic masterpiece in a world of seemingly random clips thrown together with music strapped on top with a duct tape.

The movie features great amount of Frigate and Destroyer hull fights. If variety is your thing, look no further. FRIGANK 8 presents great deal of Daredevil action, but also goes in depth showing off diversity of small hulls in the game - from Cruor to Catalyst, from Eris to Hawk and many more. Fights are fast and breathtaking. Ships will be one-shot, hulls will burn, bravery will hit its’ limits – you will definitely not skip forward.

Soundtrack used even though very fitting is rather neutral. It is something anyone would like, not just the heaviest of heavy metal, Dubstep or DnB. Music has been perfectly synchronized with the action - every transition goes hand in hand with the soundtrack and every special effect used between and during the fights is mastered to fit perfectly. It is the very essence of film making using music – it has to work together, complement each other – and FRIGANK 8 delivers in this facet just right.

There are no blobs of text during every fight, only intelligently chosen narration during transitions between segments that introduces the overall idea of the movie or specific chapter of it. Author does not comment on every event that occurs, instead you get to take away from the movie what you want, what you see and experience yourself.

From afar FRIGANK 8 is a great action paced movie featuring small ship solo fights. Take a look closer and you will find a lot more crafted into a masterpiece of a work. Whichever of this you are looking for, Prometheus Exenthal’s “FRIGANK 8” will leave you satisfied.

Alright, here we go.

First of all, I've got really hard time picking the winners, because, quite frankly, there were no obvious best reviews. If anything, people of EVE have successfully proved that they don't care about isk all that much - probably even less than I do. And that is quite good on itself. As for those who did take part, I'd say that they succumbed pretty much to the same temptation to just browse through movies and tell us what they were seeing. Might sound absurd, but in my opinion a really good review would rather keep the story somewhat untold and focus at some points people usually miss or don't give much attention to. My expectations might have been set too high, though.

But we've got what we've got and although the top-awards list is somewhat random, I'm happy to announce that the following gentlemen are awarded:

1) Theophilas - 2bil isk
It was really hard for me to distract from the vid itself (which is simply not in the league of PvP movies we enjoy and take inspiration from), but since it's a review contest the text submitted is quite good at telling us what the video is all about. Seems like I'm awarding sheer boldness and nonconformity for going in with such a weird movie, but beware - this might not happen twice.

2) Cheiftan - 1bil

3) DHB WildCat - 600mil

Both of you submitted pretty solid stuff on EVE classics, nothing more to say here, apart from the things already said above.

Also, you know, back in the days international chess tournaments awarded exactly the first half of the participants. It was a good tradition, but it can be further reinforced. So, as a token of good will and for the sake of good sportsmanship, all the rest - that is, Junko Sideswipe, Break Fast and Aldap - are receiving 200mil prizes.

Feel free to contact me ingame if you have any queries in this or related regard.

Cheers.

Well I think I am honored I won... there were a lot of compliments tinged with disappointment in your summation of the events submissions... but overall I think I expected that. I knew going in my video selection was risky and definitely jepordized my chances... but I felt the video I selected was worth it simply because it mad me laugh.

If this were a regular sponsored event, the next videos I review would be more PVP skill orientated.

I probably had more fun that I should have doing this.

Also, mad props to everyone who took the time to submit reviews, and Fond thanks for doing this. It was a righteous idea.

After reading this part I cannot help but think that you actually did not read my review.
It was specifically my goal not to mention any plot points in my review, since the challenge was to write a review, not a walkthrough or detailed report. Thus I focused on things that make a movie an experience - editing, music, variety of ships, remarks, etc.

It seems weird that you state your opinion on how the movie should have been reviewed, but then say that 2nd and 3rd place was picked based on the movie being good. (I thought it's not a movie contest, but a review one)

Don't get my post wrong, I am not butthurt nor do I think my review shines over others. If anything I'm just questioning your reasoning and shady rules/expectations.

Either way, I diaggress.

Nevertheless, I feel bad for having 200mil now, since this post is nothing blatant bitching. (it's your contest after all, you can do whatever the **** you want to be honest) (no, I won't have decency to send them back, since I've been playing for like 3 months now and have no ISK anyway :) )

Cheers
