Hello ppl i reactivated my account after nearly two months of absence, i have a question about a project i have in mind, i would like to build my own mining fleet right now i only have two accounts and i would like to do it with two accounts for starters so:

1- I know EvE is not safe even in high sec so can you get shot down if you are mining in a retriever? are retrievers targeted or is it a hulk thing only?

2- Is there any way of protecting yourself against attacks when mining in hight sec with a retriever? or these ships are to weak to tank anything?

Thank you.

Hi Nevaeh Serenity

Anything is a potential target, but it's usually a question of how much the attacker gains versus how much he loses.
Keep in mind the gain here does not have to be economic, but could also just be a cool killmail, or revenge over someone.

If a group of people wants you dead bad enough, and they don't care how much they lose, there's not much you can do. That being said, a Retriever isn't worth much, and is generally fitted with fairly cheap fittings, making it a pretty boring target for suicide ganking, where the goal often is to inflict as much monetary damage as possible.

You can't make yourself immune, but you can make it harder to take you down by fitting resistance on your shields and mining in higher security areas, where the NPC police responds faster.

If there's a Hulk sitting in 1.0 space, and another one in 0.5, the one in 0.5 is a much more interesting target, since it's so much easier taking it down.

If you are genuinely concerned, that someone is going to suicide gank you, I'd recommend you go for the Tier 1 Miniing barge / Exhumer (The Procurer and Skiff respectively), as they have base hitpoints similar to a battleship.
These ships mines a bit slower than the retriever, but will take a heavy punishment before turning into space dust.

To put it simply:

- add a damage control to your ship, Preferably T2 but a decent named one (F85 for instance) is fine
- add medium shield extender rigs
- if possible add an invulnerability field (probably name one with 34 CPU)
- mine in 0.7 systems or above

If you do all that then you'll avoid 95% of the problems, even more so if you put your second character into an Orca (which you probably should) then apart from adding 2 mining gang links (mining yield and laser range) you could also add the shield resist one giving you even more tank.

Because the retriever doesn't have a second midslot it'll be a choice between Survey scanner or an invul field. IF you put in the damage control, shield extender rigs and mine in 0.7 or above then you're fine to choose the scanner. A retriever fit would look kinda like this (again, T2 fit but you can use named just fine).

[Retriever, New Setup 1]
Damage Control II
Mining Laser Upgrade II
Mining Laser Upgrade II

Survey Scanner I

Strip Miner I
Strip Miner I

Medium Core Defense Field Extender I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I

Hobgoblin II x5

Same fitting ideas also apply to the other mining ships really, by having a bit of tank you ensure that any simple gank will quite probably fail and if they put in some thought to it they'll probably come to the conclusion that it'll take more effort than it's worth and they'll simply move to another miner who (undoubtedly) DIDN'T tank his ship.
