Just got my first solo kill on a caracal, but the awesomeness of the accomplishment is overshadowed a bit. I was going to attack him first but he ended up hitting me before I could get a shot off. Pretty sure I just survived the minute or so needed for the sentry guns to blap him to death.

Anybody else have a similar first solo kill?

My first "solo" kill was with a T1 frig on an Interceptor... except that the sentry guns did about 80% of the damage. What?
I guess he thought he could kill me and warp off but miscalculated.

Ultimately disappointing but such is life, I guess.

Yah, that's kind of how I felt after I realized the sentry guns did most of the damage. Of course once I got into true solo fights I lost two rifters in glorious explosions.

you got him to engage you on a gate and he got blapped.

only you were involved = solo kill in my book.

you used good tactics to take out an above class ship. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Unless you are out to get e-honor fights and such then you should use whatever advantage you can, expecially to get above class kills.

Not a solo kill, nor my first (actually, my first real PVP kill was a suicide ganker trying to slag my Retriever about a year ago), but something similar to the OP's situation - doing a patrol in the Black Rise FW zone in an Enyo, came across a neutral Drake, and suddenly got engaged. The Drake pilot must have forgotten about gate guns, and was fit exactly wrong for the fight (armed with HAMs, so most of his damage was wasted), so he went down fairly quickly to my Enyo, a Cormorant that came in to back me up, and mostly to the gate guns.

If it had been a formalized "duel" and it went down under the gate guns, then yeah, it would have been a bit weak, but since that wasn't the case, you've got nothing to be ashamed of in that engagement.

I was a noob flying around in a punisher with a positive sec status. I jumped a gate to find a thorax, brutix and jag on the other side. Jag attacked first followed by the other 2. The jag popped almost instantly and I some how managed to evade the fire of the two larger ships long enough to let the gate guns do their work.

I would be happy with your kill. You will find many more seemingly clueless pilots flying around and your knowledge of the game will give you a huge advantage. You will also inevitably engage under gate guns some time and get insta popped. I once was sitting on a gate with a neutral harpy. He yellow boxed and I almost jumped out of my chair to hit f1. Poof vengeance down.

Can someone please remind me why sentry guns are a thing? I forgot what the point of them was.

My first 1v1 pvp kill above class I still think was sheer luck. I was in my Arbitrator in a .4 system trying out low sec ratting when I got jumped by a Hurricane. He landed barely 10k away, scared the bejeezus out of me. We had a little neut war, and I kept my TD's on him, but he still tore me up hard when he did hit. I managed to get him to bump into a couple of asteroids, and I stayed under his guns mostly, while my drones did their work.

He died, I was at 25% hull. Took a screen shot of my flaming smoking ship, and put it as my wall paper when my hands stopped shaking. Guy gave me a big GF and a congrats on my 'strategy' in the asteroids (I still think it was just luck lol). I have not had too many 1v1 fights that were not off grid boosted, or assisted. This one will always be a special for me. ;)

My first solo kill was me trying can flipping out because everyone in my corp at the time told me to.

Basically a miner in some sort of barge got mad and warped back in his stabber to kill my lowly rifter.
For some reason noobish me didn't chicken out at the larger ship and i orbited him and killed him, it twas glorious.

Although technically my first kill and in fact first solo kills was friendly fire, but i don't count that.

My first solo kill was in a Rupture fitted with torpedoes. I was 'dueling' a Celestis who also fit Torpedoes in a belt in Amamake.

Both of us wished we were in Caracals.
