A Bit-Tech friend of mine is taking part in a design contest on 3D Connexion and the votes are quite close between him and one other person.

A bit about Scott's design:
Quote:
I wanted to design a product that would combine a 3D mouse, keyboard and tablet in one device. The design consists of 3 touch screens and the 3D controller. The multiple touch screens would replace standard buttons and provide endless customization. The main touch screen can be used as a secondary monitor with touch capabilities, a keyboard or standard track pad. The smaller screen above the 3D controller would act much like a modern smartphone. It would display things like RSS feeds, news, calenders, weather, applications and music. The circular screen around the 3D controller would display different icons and would allow the user to "spin" the menu to the desired icon set. The top surface would be a single sheet of glass giving the product a clean and elegant look.

If you could add some support and cast a vote for Scott's design, that would be awesome.

Aside from possibly being a revenge plot by a left handed person, it seems pretty nice.

While it's a cool idea, I'm not sure how useful such a device would be. As it is, the only people who would use a 3d mouse are engineers or graphics designers who are working on 3d models. The market for it is very narrow to begin with. It's one thing to design a working 3d mouse for a narrow market group, but an entirely different thing to design a specialized notebook computer for that narrow market group.

On top of that, most people who have a use for a 3d mouse would only need it when they're hard at work in their office. Having a clunky 3d mouse sticking out of your thin notebook computer means that it's no longer a thin and makes it less portable.

It's cool looking, I'll give him that much. I'm just not sure how practical it is from a business standpoint. Unfortunately, you could say the same about a jet-pack design.

That's how a 3d mouse is used. Typically, you put the 3d mouse to the left of your keyboard. You use your regular mouse with your right hand, and then the 3d mouse with your left hand. It's usually used for drafting or working with other 3d modeling programs.

All of that stuff aside, it would make my year if CCP incorporated 3d mouse functionality into EvE.
