I've only noticed the $15 monthly sub...

and a +$5 signup fee when you activate a new account.

Both of which were clearly indicated in the applicable areas when creating accounts and activating accounts.....

Eve is about Capital ships, WiS, Boobs, PI and Isk!

There's no reason for it to be there, and it's not upfront. What other game has an activation fee?

AFAIK, for just about all subscription MMOs you have to buy the game (counter-examples welcome). The only difference is that CCP don't make you buy a physical box, and that they only ever charged $5/5Euro, unlike eg: World of Warcraft where you had to buy a $60 box and then pay for the expansions as well. Or consider a more recent example: Star Wars: The Old Republic which had "special editions" going well past the $100 mark.

Complaining about paying $5 in your first month will not get much traction in that context.

With a PLEX costing $19.95, and the month-to-month subscription fee costing $14.95, they have to charge a $5 sign-up fee or they'd lose some money on PLEX.

Why? Because instead of paying $19.95 for a PLEX, people would instead just send themselves a Buddy System request and create a new account. They'd then pay $14.95 to activate that account, and their main account would be rewarded with a free PLEX for recruiting someone. They'd then cancel the new account. Net effect - they bought a PLEX for $14.95 instead of $19.95.

The $5 sign up fee negates that tactic.

/sarcasm

Did you go to the store and buy a copy of Eve? I think it is like $20.00 where I live (if you can find it) then you can just use the code to activate the game. That way you are ONLY paying $20.00 instead of that aweful $5. Oh and plus the monthly sub cost.

Never been an expansion cost, probably never will.

If you're going to b*tch over a $5 fee, then f*ck off and go play WoW. Don't forget to pay $50 per expansion while your at it!

Most games cost about 20 bucks to upgrade to the base game from a trial (or to just buy the game straight up) which includes (usually) 30 days of game time...when you upgrade via the website it costs you 14.99 for the 30 days and 5 more for "processing"...what do you know, 19.99 just like every other MMO, except all the extra content is included for free so you don't have to buy 4+ expacks for 20 bucks each just to be able to get to the end-game. OR you can simply not be fail and just make ISK for a PLEX and then upgrade completely for free.
