Well of course, I cancelled my payment because I wanted to put it on a new card.
I had not yet received my new card and was glad when they told me about it so that I could remember to put extra time.

Looks like the time when CCP could just dismiss getting or holding subscribers is gone. And the tragedy is that they're trying to keep subscribers by doing the only thing that will certainly get them rid of most of their subcribers: cater to the minority of people who liked EVE for 9 years without missing a heartbeat.

Loyal customers are good, but no company can thrive only on a few loyal customers.

Stay tuned and you'll see what i mean.

I have this vague impression that you've been in a continuous state of unsub for 3-5 months. Maybe you are like me and save by subbing for 3+ months at a time. I juggle enough non-recurring subs (cancelled immediately after renewing) that I am thankful for the messages CCP send out to keep me aware of cycles coming to a close.

I have no idea what your greivances are, but I for one can't subscribe to this brand of doomsaying. The game is friendlier than ever (as far as I've seen since 2008) to newbies, and I've seen more new players willing to try PvP since the frig rebalance began than in the previous 3 years. To me there also seems to be an uptick in the amount of media interest, player blogs, tutorial videos, spy comms leaks... all stuff that suggests to me a vigorous, healthy community.

The game ain't perfect, there sure are some things I would tweak if my finger was on the button. But EVE is not a Milton Bradley affair, with a set course of 60 paces, 6 colored pawns with otherwise identical attributes, and a certain outcome. The system, like the playerbase, is liquid in nature, so hard fixes give way to a stream of continuous adjustment, chiefly in the form of regular, free expansions. Some changes are duds. Some expansions throw a wrench into the machine. It's a process.

Rambling here. So, you've decided EVE isn't worth your money. Best of luck on your chosen path going forward. I respectfully disagree with your assessment that the end is nigh.

Those people are the ones that made EVE grow, and are still helping it grow. They are passionate about the game, effectively turning them into efficient word-of-mouth advertisement machines. Blogs, videos, all those really crazy stories about heists, betrayals and massive wars - Most of that comes from those 9 year veterans simply trying to have fun. EVE is currently still the only subscription MMO in the world which has seen almost continues grow over it's entire 9 year lifespan and is still growing.

There's one other game where people thought like you do right now. They believed that the veterans were ruining the game and that they needed to cater to a younger, hipper demographic to make the game grow because it was so unfriendly to new players. However, after they changed the game to make it friendlier, 'hipper' and new, subscriptions went down by roughly 65%, going down from 330k to roughly 120k in a matter of months.

I'm sure you heard of Star Wars Galaxies and the infamous 'New Game Experience'. It exemplifies how good an idea it is to completely alienate your current subscriberbase for the sole reason of gaining more subscriptions.

CCP had certain ideas for EVE. They're not making a game for the masses. They're making a game for the kind of people who are currently playing it. Over the past 9 years i've seen doomsayers say that EVE is going to die every single month because of another game or because it's "so hard to learn" or because it's "excel in space".

You want to know the facts?

WoW was released. People claimed EVE would most certainly be shut down because of it.
Instead, its growth rate actually went up in the months between WoW's US and EU release.

Same story around the launch of Darkfall. People proclaimed it was the end since Darkfall was 'like EVE' and would steal its subscribers. DF didn't even make a dent in the growth rate, let alone the amount of subscribers.

Again, the same thing for Aion.

Same thing for Star Trek Online, the supposed ultimate EVE killer at the time.

Same thing for Rift.

Same thing for World of Tanks, for crying out loud.

Same thing for Black Prophecy.

Same thing for The Old Republic.

And most recently, same thing for Guild Wars 2.

And yet, here we are. EVE is still running, and growing at that. Do you know when the only time was it stopped growing?

There was this little expansion called Incarna. It tried to cater to the newer players by siphoning a lot of development time away from the 'veteran features' in favour of avatar based gameplay. You know what happened?

The game lost subscriptions. Quite a few of them.

Yes, that's right. The only time when EVE lost a significant amount of subscriptions was when it betrayed those "9 year vets" you are talking about. Isn't that strange?

I'm always curious about why people think that they know better. They come here, spell doom for EVE but do not give any arguments and they usually ignore all the facts relevant to the discussion. Are they just fanbois of some other game? Do they just have entitlement issues for whatever reason?

Maybe it's a simple matter of EVE not being the right game for them, so they proudly proclaim that EVE is a game for no one. I don't know, but i am still curious.

Fact is, EVE will go on for a long, long time. Given past history and current events i don't see any reason why it would suddenly go worse, aside from a slight worry about CCP's business around Dust and WoD.

Harking back to the original topic: EVE became what it is today because CCP caters to the people who want to keep playing it, not the people who might want to play it. If you expect CCP to suddenly turn the game around, well, they tried once before and it didn't exactly work out like you would think it did.

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

My stance is simple, IMO EVE has grown to 400,000 subscribers by allowing people to do things that are not relevant to the core game, and now by not expanding non-core and focusing on the core game EVE is naturally reverting to a much lower amount of subscribers. It's not gonna die, just it's going back to be a little niche game by a little company.

By the way, I don't have an issue with the core game being catered to, my issue is with how they are taking from Jack to give to Pete.

FAI, last year I was one of the voices that suggested that mission runners should use PvP fits to run missions so there was a way to close the gap between PvE and PvP fits.

I was thinking of creating a new type of missions, more dangerous and better rewarded, that required PvP-esque fittings and were on top of the current mission system (which should be beefed with hundreds of new missions in the old fashion).

Well then, apparently CCP's reading of the idea has been to change the NPC AI and the missions to a point where everyone must fly PvP fits wether it is against players or NPCs. Roll

I hope you notice the subtle difference between "I want B in addtion to A" and "implement B to remove A".

Well, go then.

This is the ONLY MMO that has kept me intrigued enough to sub to it permanently since 2005.

I was wondering to quit during the FIASCO that Incarna was and still begrudge CCP to this day for the sheer stupidity and patronizing action and direction the company took during those dark times, but after they ACTUALLY recognized they totally frakked it up I was appeased and they decided to veer the game into a more decent path.

As you imply, there are countless MMOS in the world in the moment, you can freely sail to those. Eve has been dying since the day I logged when people , if I remember correctly were upset about minmatar tech 2 drones back in the day and Jenny Spitfire and the multiple personality disorder, then Capitals, then the silly signature war of the Carrier nerfs, then I remember a moment when some corp decided to use signatures with women and got trolled by others that decided to copy the layout but with nekkid fat male pornstars (that was hilarious) and well, I could go on and on and on about how EVE was about to die and go into dust and the servers burned and everything tasting like rotten peed upon shark that is frozen in the snow and people posted OMG Im leaving and CCP is meh and blah blah blah.

They are in this for the Money, thats has been made certain, they had to fire people, INCARNA was a poorly executed expansion and WoDMMO practically was leaching the blood literally off EVE. But game honestly will still be here in the years to come, its not the same monster I enjoyed back in 2005-2006 but its still there.

What you fail to realize from all that I have seen reading your posts, is that the ONLY thing keeping this game up and interesting is the COMMUNITY. This game is a lame ass excel spreadsheet calculator in space with awful combat mechanics and totally borked out mechanics and invisible crews that eject when you get blown up and you have to pretend they exist. This game totally blows when you see it from a certain angle, but the community that has flocked here is just MARVELOUS.

Game is plain in action, that the real garnish, sauce, cherry on top is the people on it. I have met here some of the most annoying, lying, cheating, rotten scum to ever exist in the galaxy and they have left me a plethora of HUMAN EXPERIENCES that far surpass anything I could have gotten off the streets without the fear for bullets or shivs lodged in your ribs.

There is such a seething wave of hidden ANGER, ANGST and FRUSTRATION in the community that when you try to tap into the flow you can actually feed off it and relax as strangely anachronic it can sound.

People like you, the ones that try to enjoy the ... "game" , that complain, cry , vent or simply spout negativity and feel the unfairness of the game and threaten to quit or walk away or the need to berate CCP , the Community and everyone else, you, you are part of the Ecosystem here. This game feeds on itself, over and over, like an ever gorging bloated zombie corpse that grows and eats itself in a never ending cycle of pestilent ouroboros.

The People that make this game are such sweet delicacies to the undercurrents of human emotion that the game trascends reality into the META GAME. This game surpassed the griefing tactics of TRITON in Povar back in EQ1 when they locked Planar access to other guilds. This game blows to smithereens the never ending pk of UO by a truckload of magnitude. The game itself exists to support the channeling of several base impulses inherent to human nature.

No other game I know, has the amount of METAGAMING I have seen here, none, simply put like that. No other game has it.

Yes, there are ships and you can blow other ships with pew pew, but the shady dealings of people behind the facades of pixelated avatars and their wants and needs, oh boy, those people and the complex tapestry they weave FROM the game into the outside world is marvelous.

You complain about the game, to me, its all about the miasma of emotions surrounding it. Go please, may you have fortune and luck, but know you played your part, and yes, its tiring, you are taxed and feeble, no more joy out of it. Move on, greener much simple games out there, where people just grind away the xp, explore and raid and worry about dps charts, like GW2, a game I enjoy too, why not? But to leave EVE? Only truly earth shattering events could force me into that Big smile

Selfish of me, but I hope EVE stays a "small niche game." It could only get huge if it pander to the great unwashed masses. You know, the average shallow-minded hyperactive instant-gratification seekers. Kind of like the way Bieber and Beyonce are "huge." They appeal to the vast majority of people who have no taste at all.

That's a lot of words and really there is no point. I was not even going to say a wors until that email came in -and my only purpose was to state that EVE faces a new kind of trouble, aka shrinking. Am i right? Am I wrong? It only matters me and my ability for informed hunches. Much as Mittens leaving the game during Fanfest 2013, that won't affect me in any way wether i play or don't the game, but see it coming all the way since April 2012 will bemuse me.

But, to the point. This thread should not exist and i would delete it if I could. All in all, ¿qué hago yo aquí soltando las mismas gilipolleces de siempre a los mismos gilipollas de siempre? Roll
