This is EVE: A Rant

Uh oh. Rant coming on. OK. I'm going to say this once and only once and then get back to being "reasonable."

I don't want to hear it because this is EVE. I know you've played other MMOs. I've played those too. And they were great. But they were made for kids. EVE is made for grownups. You play it the way a grown up plays. With patience. For the long term. And you have the option to play EVE almost entirely for the metagame, and that puts it in a class by itself. It takes a lot of real life skills to play EVE well. Kids don't have a lot of real life skills so they don't like EVE. They need ingame skills. They need to be a 500 Level cybermage and they need it in 3 weeks. They can tell you a lot about how their Sword of the Biggest Male Member works but they haven't got a plan further away than the next 2 hour adventure because in their MMO they don't need one and that's great.

But this is EVE. This is a world class game. Not the Same Old Thing with a worldwide following. Its like chess or poker or knife fighting or Dungeons and Dragons or one of those martial arts nobody knows how to pronounce the name of besides the people who practice it. I don't know how those crazy Swedes (I'm an American so I know nothing about geography, Iceland and Scandinavia so its all Swedes to me) ever managed to come up with this utter nerdocracy fueled by weapons grade nerdonium but nerd it they did and I am awed and bewildered and maybe just a bit grateful.

Because I've slogged the mud of other MMO universes, and this one is in a class of its own. Hey, I wish that wasn't true. I wish there were 4 or 5 other games as good as this one to choose from but there aren't.

Average age of EVE players according to Wikipedia is 27, six years after the average human brain has finished all mylenation and two years after the fancy stuff in the frontal lobes that mediate understanding of future consequence have matured and two years after the average car rental place in the United States will allow you to rent a car. Interesting correlation.

Now, amidst my self congratulation over being one of the very few who are able to give an educated guess on Exactly How Many Angels Are Able To Dance On The Head Of A Pin, I'm aware that this doesn't necessarily say only admirable things about us. Grown men and near men putting so many many hours of their time into..... Internet spaceships? Sigh. Yes. I'm aware that I should be out causing positive social change in the real world rather than fiddling while Rome burns. And yet. Here is where I actually am. And I'm too old to care anymore much about what other people think I should be doing and not doing with my time once I have met my many obligations in the Real World.

And besides (I think when they give me those looks) how do they know I'm not providing real benefits to real people as we play together in our artificial galaxy?

The first and most real benefit I can think of is to make as many of us aware as possible that we can use an MMO like this one as an opportunity to learn all this "unrelated" stuff. (Yeah I'm wincing to think what a newbie I sound like to all you guys who knew this a long time ago but I was playing the game for all those months before it even occurred to me, and I mean occurred to me at all.) That with a bit of help from your friends and yourself you could go through some kind of--what?--mental bootcamp? Training simulations? Assembly of conscious thought? That you could do this as well as play your game and have a howling good time. My guess is that this one observation is all most of the people who want to use the game to do this with will ever need from me.

You made that a lot harder to read than it should have been.

You mentioned a rant?

All I see is a guy with the 'Sword of over 9000 truths'.

+1 for a good thread. I expect MANY can relate, myself included.

The average wow player is 30 y.o. Is wow a more amture game than EvE? No. Your argument is invalid.

So the average player is 30, so there are some 15 yr olds playing.

Most of the players in my corp are 40ish the youngest is late 20's, i think this survey might need redoing.

Is there a tl;dr for this? Got bored within a couple sentences telling me that you've played the same MMOs as me.

Personally, I'd love to find a corp for my toons with folks of the older set. Trouble is, those that I've looked into just SAY they have mature players, but are full of kids.

That wasn't a premise, it's an "interesting correlation." A fallacy, but he was being emphatic for the rant.

While being kind of "no ****" for a lot of us, it was stated clearly and enjoyably. +1

There's nothing worse than an EVE player, generally considered to be top of the food chain in the MMO world, that cannot smacktalk with wit and coherency.

Its like someone took the middle out of a random essay, posted it, and expected to people to know wtf they are talking about.

I must confess that one of the factors which puts me off joining a player corp, and I would like to, is that whilst my teen-age years were great fun, I have no wish to relive them by proxy in Eve.

I like being older, calmer and taking a longer view of of things.

Maybe us 'oldies' should get together and form an old folks corp. What?

The idea that average age indicates any sense of maturity in a video game environment is simply silly.

Some of the most hilarious foolishness in the various games I've played usually generated by self important married mid 40 year olds who get caught e-diddling other members of their elf tribe or whatever.
