What might have kept me playing EVE

I have been inactive for almost 8 months and as my finger hovers over the button of no return, I find myself wondering what might have kept me here indefinitely. When I first started that most definitely was my intention, and now I have more SP then I ever wanted to have... a fantasy for a young eternum who has grown old and realized that at the farthest reaches of the universe things are not nearly as complex and dynamic as he had first envisioned. Me... I am a Sci-Fi nerd. I love space, I love science and I think that the classical sci-fi works represent the pinnacle of the human imagination.

But I digress.

Thinking Out loud

I might have liked a small hand in the creation of the world that I built, as in the physical world that everyone pilots in. If instead of a static POS or a static outpost, I could have instead arranged the tiny little towers of a tiny little city in space, even if it was only at a graphic level equivalent to what was seen in in the EVE Exodus trailer or EVE Never fades, I would have invested more meaning into that structure. Even with graphics that were far less beautiful then the graphics that we have today, I might have felt far more immersed in a sci-fi universe of my own making.

On the point of the old graphics, one of the first things I noticed when I joined this game almost half a decade ago was the pretty asteroids. I remember the bronze sheaths of metal sticking out of asteroids floating in space, and i remember thinking of how cool that was. Now it is literally just crusted space poop. The planets all looked alike but they appeared to have a vast SCi-Fi city of lights on their surfaces. The Amarr planet that the Oris station orbits around looked like some golden world out a movie like Dune...instead of say... a facsimile of the planet earth? It made a person dream of what could be in the stars in the same way that the original star trek did, 2001 a space odyssey or close encounters of the third kind did.

Hell I remember the very first time I saw a mining drone. It was a glitch and it had attached to the side of my ship. I was convinced that it was a space star fish of some kind and thought of how cool that was. I thought it was a form of space life that the programmers had added, and I figured that it was doing something undesirable to my ship. I went into the help channel in order to ask how to remove it and they did not know what the hell I was talking about. Remember star fox on the super Nintendo? They had all kinds of space jellyfish, space whales and space-whatevers filling the void and I expected to find them here. Why not right? There seemed to be two of them orbiting around a planet in the EVE never fades video?

4 years ago I had this crazy idea that a blob of drakes would be awesome sauce, and my corp mates kept telling me how much drakes sucked… so I dropped the idea. Funny right? But that was the beginning of my interest in sov warfare, only to learn that what you get was a name in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Seemed… well.. allot of work for a sentence fragment. I then took a shuttle and plotted a course 80 jumps deep to see what was really out there in deep dark nullsec. It all looked exactly the same as empire and that surprised me. I vividly recall passing through BOB space and as a devoter shot at me I typed in local “Friendly” only for him to reply “NBSI?” I had no idea what that meant so I quickly replied “No, just passing through : )” The smiley face probably painted me all over as a stupid noob, but regardless I still made it almost 100 jumps through null in a shuttle without a dent in the paint.

Mostly because no one was even out there…

All my dreams of a sci-fi simulator aside I tried to make the best out of it anyway. Egarly I awaited an Incarna that would promise walking character interactions in space stations that had grand hallways and flowing streams in them. Like in that video that no one probably remembers? What an awesome idea that was. But Alas, they were the brainchild of different designers.

100 ideas to entertain myself came and went and in the end I had seen everything and done everything that EVE had to offer. This is what is now known as the sandbox. The thing about a sandbox is, it is just sand. Sand castles are nice and all, but sand is still sand. It is just dust and air. Some of us dreamed of stars and an endless expanse that could never be touched. Some of us expected EVE to be a dream world more liken to the matrix then a sand box in a kindergarten playground.

If EVE had structures that I could build in lower quality Trinity graphics
If EVE had space life forms
If EVE had sci-fi cities on worlds that I could actually see
If EVE had space stations with original X-box-like-HALO 1 graphics, but they had rivers and great cathedrals over looking planets
If null sec was more beautiful and dynamic then empire space and filled with cities and planets that people could decorate and name.

Then that would have been content. Instead all I got was sand, a bucket and a tiny plastic shovel. Go play the game said the game and I did. But in the end I found nothing that resembled what a very noobish and wide-eyed eternum had hoped for. This is just me, explaining to myself, why a game that I have dedicated over 4 years to and more money then I am willing to admit (in computer equipment, mouse, keyboard and various plexes) has suddenly lost all appeal for me. Trolls commence, or sign off with the things that you wished that EVE had since the first day that you undocked your ship.

Sounds like you should play Sim City! Maybe there are some mods that can make it look like you want?

Other than that, these might be valid suggestions for extenions or add-ons in the future, but the game simply does not have these functions. Did you not inform yourself beforehand so you could know what you were going to expect?

There's a mod for SimCity 4 that allows you to hold colonies on mars.

Lest not forget that a new SimCity is being released mid next year, and it's going to be sandbox online goodness...

You should try the X series. X Rebirth is coming out in a few months and sounds like it will be everything you wanted sans multiplayer.

I'm just sort of slowly building power out of the hope that if I keep at it, eventually all that will be added in and I'll be able to rule the universe.

Hopefully sometime before before actual warp drives are invented.

What was your last career path before 8 months passed by?

Perhaps you should try another career path as things may have changed since you last played it.

If you did press that button, you may regret it.

I have read these post in every mmorpg I have ever played, all the people posting them have one thing in common, they have never steped up to the plate and made their own game. I see your vision, and would play. So rather then tell a company who is making moneyy they are doing it wrong, make your game and show them how it is done. Big smile

There's not a awful lot to do in Eve any more. Most of the time is spent waiting around in stations for skills to mature.
These Eve days, you don't even have to make money , just sell a plex.

My best moments in Eve have been the first week or so of a new character, I guess that's why I keep on making them. :)

some thing ever one else dose, update skills and troll the forums.

All automated intel should be removed from the game including Instant local/jumps/kills/cynos for all systems/regions.Eve should report nothing like this to the client/3rd party software.Intel should not be force fed to players. Player skill and iniative should be the sources of intel.

I really want the old gallente pleasure hub station interior (IIRC that's what it's called) back/updated. I think it added a bit of variety to: "All the space stations look the same inside".

I want more station variety
