3 Character slots (1 PVP - 2 Traders/Industry Alts) good idea?

Hi,

Currently on the 1 account I have my main 70m SP PVP toon and I have 2 Trader's sitting in different regions (One is a Tychoon IV the other is a Wholesale IV).

I am looking at 'adding' the ability for the Traders to Research/Copy/Manufacturing Items at a POS.

Does anyone else use this setup to generate ISK in a semi "passive" way? Is it a good idea?

Im all for using single accounts, but would this be an efficient way of using the character slots up to help my main? rather than having multiple accounts.

PErsonally i have multiply accounts for it, but you can get started on one account just as easy..

Now industry is not really semipassive. You need to do research on what to manufacture so you can actually sell it as well. Logistics to needed materials and finished products also takes it effort of doing yourself or hiring someone else to do it for you..

But if little extra work dosent scare you, go for it. Small pos is cheap option to start, expecially if you can put it in highsec. As industrialist one of your primary activities will be to get those bpos reearched so you dont have so much material waste and can build them faster.

And if that pos is in few jumps away from trade hub in some backwater system, you hardly get harashed by wardecks either.

So heres my quick recomendation:

Since your going for two toons, put up small pos + couple of labs in some highsec backwater system.

Manufacture in npc station, easy enough to find slots and pos is needed for research anyways, small tower has barely enough cpu left for couple asembly arrays. Added bonus, none can blowup that npc station.

Corporate office in pos system, keep bpos there, not at pos.

Remote reseach with right skills, so with enough skills your trader can be in hub doing what it does and launch remote research jobs on a side... Only time you need to visit pos is refuel it and get copies out of lab...

And if you ever run into problem on what else to manufacture, take look at your towers preferred fuel blocks, sometimes you can save some iskies by building them yourself

I do something similar to this, and I'm sure others do as well. Once you get your main skilled up, one can make the argument that skilling alts on the same account is a better use of SP then piling more into your main. You could look at PI as well as industry for some extra semi-passive income.

Do whatever works for you. This sounds like a good idea if you have a single account to have your PVP main, then a Jita trade alt and a secondary hub trade alt. Just make sure you set up your characters so that if you ever decide you want to go to multiple accounts you minimize the number of character transfers you need to do. You also want to come up with uses for your alt that have very finite amounts of SP required to do their job. For example, a research alot for dealing with highsec POS research can function very well with 1-2M SP.

For example, I have 3 accounts which are layed out as follows

Account #1
Char 1: PVP-main (60M SP)
Char 2:Highsec Industry/Invention toon (50M SP)
Char 3:Empty (waiting for training time)

Account #2
Char 1: PVP-main (110M SP)
Char 2:Highsec Industry/Invention toon (35M SP)
Char 3:Highsec Research/Copy toon (1M SP)

Account #3
Char #1: PVP-main in training (5M SP)
Char #2: JF/cloaky hauler toon (15M SP)
Char #3 Highsec research/copy toon + hauler(3M SP)

This way I can triple box with all my PVP toons at the same time. I can also triple box with my main industry toons for mining or whatever when I'm feeling anti-social. I can also log on my "main" 2 PVP chars that are capital capable and run the JF toon at the same time to deal with moving assets. My PVP toons never go to highsec and my highsec toons never go to lowsec. I do this because bringing my highsec toons into lowsec would compromise the name of my alt corp which runs all of my POSes. It sounds like you might be in a similar boat, so in that case using the alts as trade alts is a good idea.

The other benefit is that you can have a guy in Jita buy stuff for your main, then use redfrog to ship it to the closest highsec system to your main which will help your logistics chain.

The point is, just think about what you plan on doing and if you think you'll ever switch to a second or third account. If so, then it would suck to have to pay to move alts off your main account because you invested so many SP's into them that it isn't feasible to start a new character to accomplish the same job. If you are thinking about a second account, wait for one of the good buddy programs to maximize your training time before you have to pay for the account.

I do something similar to what you are thinking of and what others have said. I run two accounts but they are generally setup the same as far as alt slots go. Each account has the following:

  1. PvP/Industrial Main - This is the primary character
  2. Reseach Alt - This is a secondary character that can mine, research BPOs, haul goods, and do production (including capitals). Handy for those times when the main is wardecced and you want to move that freighter to Jita.
  3. 900k SP or less Cyno Alt - The only purpose for this character is to light cynos. Using rookie ships and having less than 900k SP means their only costs at death is a new cyno module.


This works well for me as I can make BPC, build ships, or whatever, without having to involve the mains who are in different regions. I don't make a lot of isk doing this, its more or less for side projects and to have a backup available if my main can't do something.

For me this arrangement came about because I ran more accounts but wanted to consolidate things. After some thought I realized what I wanted for each account were a main, someone to run a freighter and research when the main can't, and someone to light a cyno who didn't cost me anything for clones.

I'm also pretty much the same: main, research, cyno.

This is pretty much king for cyno alts. Mine are similarly trained except I gave them Engineering 5 which I half regret. I've been thinking about deleting them and starting over, but that means taking 2-3 weeks of training away from the main.

With a single account you may actually be better off giving Planetary Interaction a try. The income won't be huge but it is profitable and semi-passive and the initial training times are far less than research/industry.

yes. this is a near ideal setup. the key principle is that only one character on the account can be 'active' in the sense that it occupies the signficant percentage of your available gaming time. Production/research characters are ideal. P.I. is also an excellent choice and the three together are fantastic. It may involve setting a weekly schedule where you need to be online with the alts for several hours to cycle through all your jobs. If you are required to participate in pvp on a certain schedule, you will need to consider how tightly you run your production/research operation. If you can't log off for 4hrs during a CTA and you've got jobs to deliver/start and get to market, you'll need to factor that into your planning.

It's a good idea OP. Plenty of people do it.

If you get your planning right (read low maintenance industry/research projects) it's and easy way of injecting at least a bill per month into your wallet.
