Two servers?

This is not a proposal, this is not an idea, this is a question.

If CCP give you the choice of staying on this server (I know it's really a cluster, but bear with me) or going to a new server, which would you pick?

Framework for deciding would be this:

Its a one way ticket for your character. once you go, you're gone.
CCP would equally add content to each server, like purdy gfx.
There would be no connection with DUST on existing server.
No transference of wealth/stuff.
If you want to come back, you can't, and no new subs will be added.
No comms between the two.
All new subs will be on the new server.

Answer (a) stay or (b) go

Please indicate how you've been playing as well.

Thank you.

What's the point in answering? CCP has stated they want to keep the single universe approach and it's a major selling point for the game. Staying on the old server would be a death sentence anyway, since all your points divide the existing playerbase and doom the old server to a certain death. The only sensible choices are to transfer and accept the loss of everything you've worked for because of a developer whim or quit the game in disgust. Both bad choices and even CCP isn't stupid enough to force that decision on the playerbase.

Sorry, I should have been clear: it's a hypothetical question.

Not only would I not want to transfer, I would argue strongly against the creation of such a seperate server. It would be strongly detrimental to EVE and would remove one of the greatest strengths of the game merely to provide a meaningless sop to the childish entitled people who are hurtebutte because CCP has dared to create another game.

While the idea of a fresh start is somewhat tempting this is more due to a wish to see Eve be what it used to be (in terms of solo/small gang pvp and the fact that great wars were less commonplace and felt far more epic. In reality, people would just skill up in no time and 6 months down the line it would be just as boring as it is now.

Ultimately I'd quit since I have no interest in playing sharded games.

They should really create 2 servers, one which has concord in ALL space, and other being with limited safety. I'm positive nothing would go wrong.

Also your rhetorical question makes no sense.. There would be almost no difference between the 2 other then the numbers would be split in half(relatively).

The real rhetorical question would be, would you willing to start fresh on a fresh server, and leave your old character behind.

Also no I'm not advocating either idea what so ever.

You would be able to take your existing characters/accounts, just not log into the existing server, or transfer wealth.

There would be a difference, as the existing server would not accept connections from those who have transfered, and, new accounts/characters.

This would also mean any 'company' who sets up shop to marco/bot mine, would not be able to do this on the existing server.

It also means that over time, you can move to the new server, as there would not be any time constraints on when you transfer.

One thing also of consideration is lapsed accounts and characters.

If they were given a time limit of, say, 6 months to either login or transfer their accounts/characters, this would unlock all lapsed character names and corporate names, as the new server would allow their creation.

More food for thought. Not trying to convince/persuade you either way.

Technically, it would not be a shard.

The existing server would continue as long as it would need to, but would not accept invalid connections.

The Chinese server, by your reckoning, is a shard.

The Chinese server exists simply due to laws in China. Your vision of a 2nd server is dumb?

tl;dr: Stay

Good question.

I think I'd prefer to stay on the non-Dust server, I like the idea of there being some kind of connection to other EVE games on consoles but the way Dust is implemented just irks me.

I spend most of my time in high sec doing missions and exploration with the occasional wormhole trip to break it up a bit. Some FW too.

Strange as it sounds, and contrary to forum etiquette, I'm interested in the opinions of other people.

And no, that wasn't a jab.

And no, that wasn't a lie wrapped up in a preconception.
