The EvE population will always fluctuate just as long as we do what we can to invite new players, i believe eve will grow in the years to come, as most of us know, EvE Never FadesSmile

Eh. I see populations in the low 40's over the weekends, and that's as high as I've ever seen EVE go. (A few times as high as the 50's, but that was before the CQ fiasco and the great lag-fest that large-scale combat has turned into). The subscriber base seems pretty static, actually -- it doesn't grow much, but it doesn't shrink much either.

DUST has eaten up a lot of CCP's resources, and I keep hoping that after DUST is live the company will make some long-needed changes to the EVE client -- the window GUI and art assets desperately need an upgrade, as does the whole missioning system. EVE is already a formidably complicated game; the outdated and complex UI is just another way the game scares off many new players. Worse yet, the client is really badly-optimized and needs performance tuning.

The population number on the launcher/eveoffline is counted by active accounts connected, right? If that's the case, why do people always go off of that number when discussing it? It should at the least, always be divided by two or three. I haven't met anyone ingame that doesn't have 2 accounts at a minimum.

PS. agreed, d3 sux. I was hating on the d3 haters when they started hating but once I saw the bigger picture I started hating too.

No, it did not stop, nor HAS not stopped.

Don't tell me you are going to ARGUE over legitimate statistics.

It did reached another small peak in April during the post-FanFest Debacle, but has been on an obvious slide again.

The number of 4 and 5 year players I know that have quit over the past few months has been saddening.

You need to compare the bases before the Oct/Nov - Jan/Feb peak. Year over year, we're not doing nearly as poorly as you claim. The real question is how we're going to be able to do anything with these numbers once Dust Bunnies are counted in the online stats. :)

I know several that have one account. Hell, 3/4s of Heretic Army has only one account.

For the record:
Sun 2012-09-02 — 47,079 PCU (trending towards bottom of an upwards-trending saw-tooth pattern).
Sun 2011-09-04 — 46,625 PCU (trending straight downwards).

Compare last year's numbers with the numbers for this year.

I've seen over 60,000 online at a time, but that was years ago. I forget what happened, but there was some CCP change that caused a massive stink and a huge chunk of EvE's bitterest vets quit en masse. I don't remember if it was because of Dust or the captains cabin thing or something else around that same time.

Interestingly enough, right after all those people left there was a campaign to get new people to join right afterward. As someone on a different forum said it best, "EvE is one of the only games that would actually benefit by having a of veteran players quit, as they currently have so much power that they bottleneck the game for any new players trying to join & advance their in-game lives."

Speculation: Dust will run on a separate server; we only interact at certain points. Therefore, separate server, separate numbers.
