Looking into getting a Tablet. Been looking at Ipads, Samsung Galaxy Note, Asus Transformer...etc. Not real familiar with that sort of hardware so not sure what to look for on specs. Primary uses will be for lite web surfing, pictures, looking up recipe's in the kitchen etc. Anyone have anything else similar to recommend?

I have a first generation iPad and have had it for about two years, absolutely love it and will be upgrading to the new iPad probably around Christmas. I haven't used other tablets though. One thing I must say though is the battery life has been great, really surprised that the battery is stilling good order. Over 2 years it's been turned off a handful of times, I work 12 hour shifts and I can spend 10-11 hours browsing forums over the 3G network, listening to music and I usually still have 15%+ battery when I get home. Safari web browser is simple and quick for me, picture quality is very good and I think it's pretty light for what it is.

Mine has also had water spilled on it three times, dropped down 5 stairs last week (slipped out of my hand), has a dent in its case from god knows what and has never had a screen protector, still works and there's no scratches on the screen. I actually find my iPad to have faired much better than my iPhone 4 which looks like its been in a warzone.

If you are really big into cooking and expect the tablet to get splashed now and again I think Sony are releasing a new waterproof tablet (or maybe splash proof, can't recall) and one of the key points they mentioned was that it would be great for the kitchen.

I think just about any of them will do what you want.

Are you going to use some kind of dock for hands free and to enhance the audio?

Not quite sure yet on docking. Mostly getting it for the significant other for her use. She has a bunch of recipe's from her mother, grandmother and great grandmother that are on very old paper. I scanned them into PDF so she can have access to them in the kitchen. Other uses will be mostly email and light surfing. She's not so much into the whole audio thing.

Did some looking into the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and thats looking like our choice unless i get some other bad info. Ipads are just too expensive and we both dont like the apple store. Too limiting.

You can get refurbished iPad 1 for half the price of the new one: http://www.geeks.com/products_sc.asp?cat=1259

"Lite use"

2nd hand ipad 1 16gb would suffice. I use mine for browsing, games (angry birds!) , ebay, netflix, gbtv etc the list goes on.
Anything else is overkill for your stated needs.

Now if you want overkill then http://eee.asus.com/eeepad/transformer-infinity/features/

I just bought this http://www.asus.com/Tablet/Transformer_Pad/ASUS_Transformer_Pad_TF300T/ with
the keyboard dock.

My previous and first was a viewsonic g-tablet which has its faults but becomes a lot more usable with
a plethoria of alternate versions of android to install. Pick one up for $100 on ebay, tegra 1 16gb with usb and
option to expand the memory via sd card. Probably half the price of a 2nd hand ipad 1 but a little tech
know how required to install a new version of android to make it more user friendly.

Bah foiled by the ipads infernal abilty to screw up the longer a post is when your composing it.
You got to try it to see what i mean.

I swapped over to my faithful old g-tablet with a $30 leather (i think) case with a intergrated usb keyboard.
Seems at its best with android 3.01.

Ipads are generally more expensive and lacking in upgrade options because of built in limitations. Ipad
owners are also more likely to drive toyota prious's........alas i feel the hate and contempt building within me......

SMUG BASTARDS WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU DRIVE A UNDERPOWERED CAR WITH CHIPS ON YOUR SHOULDER
TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH NORMAL FOLK ON THE FREEWAY. IF YOUR SO CONCERNED WITH FOSSILS FUELS AND
SUCH THEN GET A BLOODY DIESEL.......TWICE THE PERFORMANCE WITH BETTER FUEL ECONOMY AND YOU
DON'T DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD LOOKING LIKE MEAT AND TWO VEG.

I got my ipad 1 as a hand me down from my wife who marched me into bestbuy with vice like grip to my
love spuds and made me buy her an ipad 3.
