I'll elaborate a bit as well.

You can jump out regularly to screw with the probers. They'll think they lose thier target and have to reset there ranges and rescan. It can get screwy. I set a dscan range 15000000 or I think. Play with it. You want to have a range of a few AU, which means they are getting close and you should move out for a few minutes.

If they do find you, ignore them if they are just flipping cans to maintain agression. They are just trying to bait you. If they are cleaning your salvage and loot, start popping the wrecks. Eventually the lack of reward will have them move on. On more than one occasion I've ninja salvager express frustration when they realized they scanned me down again, because they know they did all that work for nothing.

This is all assuming you are in high sec. Otherwise, well, you should fitted to respond to aggressor accordingly. Remember that if you do attack, then if he is fleeted, his buddies can now warp to him and help him. So unless you are absolutely certain that he has no help, and they he can't field a better ship to come back and kill you, its best to leave them be as they pests they are.

I like big guns. I can not lie. You other suckas can't deny. When I warp in, with an itty bity sig, with an arty in your face, you get sprung. You want to pull out your debuffs, 'cause you want to loot my stuff...deep, in a worm with nary, an escape but you can't stop staring. 'Cause, Oh crap!, Baby's got Point!

I set all wrecks to abandoned (blue), and let them loot whatever they want.

This is a good way to prevent accidentally opening up pvp.

Accidentally pvp is good.
Just remember one thing: don't shoot if you don't intend to kill.
If there is a thrasher, make sure you point and web it before making other moves. Watch for your drones.
And if you are in a goddamn mission fit - go dock and grab some tackle first!
After you kill him, dock and wait for 15 minutes (he might be waiting you in his own battleship or t3, that your mission ship will have no chance dealing with).
Carry ECM drones in case he will have logi, who will be repping this thrasher. Jam the thrasher and warp out (minnie ships are easiest to jam).
Don't agress this logi, because this will let logi to dock and attack you. Two targets is much worse, even if you point logi and start killing it, thrasher will warp away and bring something heavy. The moment you attack second ship while you are fighting first, you are dead.

Honored are the dead, for their legacy guides us.

Hate to necro this thread, but this is good info. Someone was trying to goad me into attacking him after he stole a item from a wreck I need from a mission. I was unsure whether to attack him or not. But I didn't and that was a good thing, cause he was in a frig, but probably had a fleet standing by. Also I was missioning hear a trading hub. good info.

If they are new they might not know taking the wrecks are bad. i just started playing and there is a youtube video that shows you how to salvage in that video he was taking all wrecks even yellow. so i did it for a little bit not knowing untill someone told me.

I saw a lot of replies telling you what to do when those guys show up, but nothing telling you how to avoid them in the first place.

Don't mission near trade hubs. They'll scan you every time.

Use D-scan. Set it for 360 scan. Maximum range. Look for Combat Probe, Sisters Combat Probe etc. (this uses your overhead settings)
If more than 2 probes are on your scan it is past time to leave for a few minutes.
Have fun with them, warp to a station and launch drones. Hang out there for a while. Watch for probes and then watch them warp to you at the station. :) Stay in docking range just in case they really want you.

And yeah, don't shoot them. They either have really good pvp fits or they'll have logi setting off grid waiting to rescue them. There may even be an Orca hanging around with pvp ships waiting for the ninja if he is using a bait fail fit ship.

Hope this helps.

Actually, I tend(ed) to set it to a shorter range so I knew when someone was warping in on me and didn't get all the clutter from mission zones or even random mission systems with POS, drones, and a bunch of other stuff. I think it was somewhere between 500K and a million km. Might have been ~ 50K though, and it worked generally speaking, provided I used it.

The key is, you'll see the drones as they need to be in a certain range to lock you down, and it still takes a bit of time for them to do that. Mission zones usually have a lot of clutter, ships, and drones, so they need more time to focus on one particular ship.

Once you've got those probes in view, you start cycling your overview every 2 seconds when they disappear. If nobody shows up after awhile, you might as well go on about your business.
