But don't feel bad because you could be getting the sequel in as little as 10 years if he smiles enough and fakes being nice.

Should maximum sentence laws really apply to multiple murders?

There will be no deviation from "the plan" Straight

*Edit: Also the guy that shot Lenin was up for parole last week for the 7th time... it was denied.

Just because they CAN be paroled doesn't mean they ever will. Killing 77 people is pretty much grounds that he'll never be let out

His sentence is 21 years and while there is a law that can technically keep him in, it relies on him not acting nice and pretending to reform like a school bully. More then likely it looks like 21 years.

That aside I'm just saying maximum sentencing seems like a dumb thing.

Law is a strange thing, best not to think about it too much P

I get rehabilitation and even though it is very hard especially for families of victims I understand it for murderers.

But serial killers, spree killers that I don't understand. I think there is a limit where you just gotta say no you can't come back to society, it is just too big a risk for everyone who didn't murder a whole bunch of people.

Something tells me the guy isn't about rehabilitation. Having said that though, if I were to ever go to prison I sure hope its that one. Looks like it would sure beat an American cell where your bunk mate will most likely try to kill you the first night your there.

He will stay in for a long time.

As it happens, I am pretty satisfied with the prison system in my counter (Norway). I don't get the petty revenge fueled system in say US.

As for "only" 21 years... 21 years is a pretty damn long time. Its the entire youth of his life in a small cell with no freedom. And it is likely he will stay in 'forvaring' even longer.

Even if he gets out after 21 years, it would'nt suprise me if someone killed him. Just for to be the guy/girl whom killed Breivik

I am an american and I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure i agree with the long term incarceration of our offenders either. I mean, locking people up for most of their lives without any real introduction to the world as it would be once they are released on parole, if at all. Prisons can be a really horrible place for people, mentally and physically.

my question to you is, the offenders in the norwegian penal system, when they are released then what? what does your gov't do when the prisoner is granted release ? Does norway provide them with training to be a productive member of society? Mental health rehabilitation?

There is next to zero percent chance that he'll be out before he dies. 21 years is the sentence, or 14 weeks for each of his 77 victims, but Norwegian law allows for that to be extended indefinitely in cases such as this. That said, much of the rest of the world could seriously learn a few lessons from how Norwegians and their justice system have handled this whole situation.

From what I have understand, the Norwegian system places a much greater emphasis on rehabilitation of offenders as opposed to the American system which stresses punitive measures and long, drawn-out sentences with little to no training or rehabilitation.

Ahh for the old ole days when they just put everyone to the axe or burning stakes... Not cause you deserved it...(Most of the time you didnt) rather cause they didnt want to deal with you.

That equates to maximum time served laws and a guy who killed about 70 adolescents and injured over 200 people how?

You are right though. In this particular case this is not a guy who I want to deal with. Witch's however are fine in my books.

They can take an education while in prison, actually. David Toska did just that.

I think we can take just a few hints from Saudi Arabia... stealing: first offense, cut off the left hand. 2nd offense, cut off the right hand.... there is no 3rd offense P
