Newb question re: clone upgrading

Howdy,
My alpha clone is at 750k+ SP and I'm preparing myself to upgrade to beta clone but have a quick question about getting podded after upgrade. If I get podded in my beta clone do I have the option to be 'installed' in a new beta clone if I get podded? I can't imagine that the game would force people with millions of SP into the default alpha clone with room for only 900k SP. So how does it work? The EVElopedia on pod death was a bit loose in the details of the actual process.

Thanks,
Griffton

At a Medical Station you can perform several tasks

  • Increase the Skill Point storage value of your clone.
  • Change the Station that your clone is created at when you are podded.
  • Install a Jump Clone.

Each Class (Beta, Iota etc) of clone can handle a maximum specific amount of Skill Points.
When you are podded you automatically go to your new clone at the Station Specified.

If your clone can only store 6m SP, and you have 7m SP when you are killed you will lose some of those excess Skill Points.
If your clone can store 7m SP, and you have 6m SP when you are killed, you will spawn at the specified station with ALL your SP, but you will need to repurchase improved clone insurance as it has been used up.

If you have 6m SP, and purchase 9m SP's of clone insurance and then a few minutes later decide that actually you want 12m SP of clone insurance, the new higher value replaces the lower value, the 9m SP option no longer applies to your character.

Your medical clone (i.e. the one that you revert to when you're podded) can _only_ be stored at stations with a medical bay, where you can upgrade it before you have to undock.

As far as the money goes, if you don't have the money to re-upgrade your clone on death, don't assume the risk of losing your pod by going into low-sec (some risk of podding) or null-sec (near-guaranteed podding if you're caught in a situation where your ship goes down). Or w-space (moderate risk of podding), though you shouldn't probably be going into w-space without a more experienced pilot looking over your shoulder this early in the game (you can, obviously, but be aware you're probably going to end up in trouble of the 'splodey kind pretty fast if you make a habit of it).

Basically the same deal as with taking ships into at-risk areas, don't fly 'em if you can't replace 'em.

(I actually keep a spare set of implants in a jump clone for when I get podded, as well, them being more expensive than the clone upgrade itself. Before I had a JC, I just kept spare training implants in a station container in the station where my med clone floats.)

EDIT: if i remember the math right, podding loses you 5% of the difference between your sp total and the sp total of the medical clone, so frankly you're not going to be losing a huge amount even from ******* up and not being upgraded until you're looking at 5-10m sp anyhow. 10M sp - 900k *.05 = 450k sp lost for forgetting to upgrade, that hurts. 1M sp only loses you 5k, which is like a day to retrain. Don't stress too terribly much about this yet. Stay upgraded, but don't freak the hell out about it.

Wonderful topic;

You'll notice when your new that your default (I.e. free) clone has way more sp than you current level.

Abuse thfr$&@?k out of this. Unless you stick expensive implants into your only clone ( research polymorph something something to make sure you can have at least one jump clone to protect your implants), wander everywhere you can. Yard more free young in game than y ou ever will be again.

It literally costs you nothing to die!

Wander everywhere and you will see areas of The game that many of the vets in your Npc corp chat have never seen.

When young, fly reckless. Its probably the best time you can enjoy and afford it.

To answer the question, as everyone missed it, yes, when you're podded, you are cloned back to life in the clone that you had upgraded before the podding (Say Kappa clone grade ie.).
You wake up in the station where you had placed that medical clone and you're given a new alpha clone (900k SP) that remains inactive and is stored in the medical facility of the station.
That new inactive clone isn't able to hold the SP of your pilot if you get podded again right away, so you need to upgrade it to the appropriate level and keep an eye on the grade of your medical clone as you skill up.
Other answers are good informations too nontheless.

Incorrect Smile

You can also set your medclone to a station where your corp has an office. However, unless the corp office station has a medical facility, you're SOL if you get podded (so it's better to wake up farther away, but in a medical facility).

That said, the "upgraded" clones (Beta, Gamma, etc) are just insurance for your SP in the event you're podded. You have to re-buy the clone when you get podded.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia
