8 probes, how do you use them?

So far, I've been experimenting with how to best use 8 probes, and though I would get other people's advice.

Way's I've experimented with:
7 probes (standard center, north, south, east, west, top and bottom) with a deep space probe off in the distance.
8 probes in a box (4 corners on bottom, 4 corners on top)
8 probes in the same config as the 7 probes, but the center probe is changed for 2 slightly up and down.

So far, the 7 probes is the easiest to use, the 8 probes in a box gives the best strength in the center, but weakest on the edges (and its harder to control), while the other 8 probe configuration is easier to control but I'm not sure if it actually gets any better benefit than the 7 probe configuration.

So if you have 8 probes, how do you use them?
