Stunning level of incompetence with failure to download all of a client patch drags on and on.

For the better part of this year there has been an acknowledged bug with the Eve client that stops 'optional' client patch downloads part way through and then complains incredibly enough that the patch cannot be installed (hey - maybe downloading all of the tiny client patch first, would work???? Just a thought...).

This has been dragging on since the beginning of this year, and shows no signs of being addressed, though at least my bug reports are now responded to as being a known bug (e.g. bugreport - ID:116544). Not that CCP seems to give a crap...

Then the last couple main patches (the non-optional regular ones I mean) started suffering the same issue. They'd crap out part way through download, though thankfully main patches resume from where they left off. However since they crap out downloading every percent or so, it's easier to download the standalone version. Oh, if only there were standalone versions of the 'optional' client patches... *sigh*

One thing is unlike the client patch download failures, the main patch download fails actually give an error:

"There was an unexpected error while retrieving update status: Unable to download file mac/evepremiumpatch288329-292761-mac.tgz from the server. Error: [Errno 996] Overlapped I/O incomplete: ´IOCompletionWsaGetOverlappedResult failed with error 996: Overlapped I/O incomplete\r\n´ Do you want to go to support page?" and Eve quits and never opens the support page when I click yes (a bug within a bug - how very CCP).

Anyway, back to my 38th attempt to try and keep a client patch download going for the 20 seconds it would require to complete.... joy oh endless joy.

P.S. This is not a network issue, at least nowhere near my end or New Zealand's, and everything else within Eve stays connected. It is only downloading patches in-game that fails time after CCP ignored time (one would think their patch server logs showing their server only sending tiny parts of patches again and again would indicate to them they've a problem worth fixing... but I guess not).

Hi Toovhon,

I too, have been extremely frustrated by this. I believe, however, that I have found a workaround and I am trying to have other mac users help me verify that it works. Hopefully, this will provide CCP with some insight on a resolution.

I've created a short YouTube video outlining the problem and the workaround here:
Mac Patch Issue (YouTube)

If you don't feel like watching the video: Set the game to windowed mode, and drop the resolution down by one setting. This, for me at least, has stabilized the game and patching so that it all works as expected. You can set it back to full-screen once you've patched, but I found leaving it in windowed mode keeps the game more stable.

Thanks,

Darwin

G'day Darwin :-)

You can also just press escape and go to the general tab of Eve's settings, and try again and again to download the patch. But of course this can take a great many tries as you know :-(

However, I have had success with tabbing out of Eve as the patch downloads since I posted the above post. Weirdly something about not having Eve as the active app prevents downloading patches from crapping out - twice now in a row. So I'm not 100% sure, but I think this works. You might try it, as it's less hassle than changing graphics settings. Just command-tab out as the patch begins to download, then back in after 30 seconds or so, depending on your connection speed.

Anyway - my thanks for your response. In this case misery loves company, though hopefully life as Eve for Mac players will now be less horrible come patch time. But shame on you CCP for letting this issue drag on for so very many months. However good on those Mac users who have worked to find ways around CCP's crappy code! :-)

Toovhon
