The same thing could be said about TF2 and its hats yet Valve seem to be doing quite well.

The console gamer is an entirely different animal and DUST is a completely different game. They won't be idling/chatting in trade servers showing off their rares, feeling pressure to buy keys. They'll download a free game when they're bored, play and then put down the controller and possibly never come back.

Which makes any impact people with 0 investment have on a the sandbox really questionable.

That's a good point that's had me wondering what kind of impact CCP expect Dusties to have on our game play when they may only be playing the game for a matter of weeks at most sometimes before moving on to the next cheap thrill they can download.

Dust has the potential to profit. They're running off of the LoL model, definately one of the more profitable f2p models out there. Calm down...

I just hope that we are in some way allowed to scam the **** out of the dust players. They won't know whats coming.

They'll be subject to the same rules and mechanics as we are as far as I know.

So? If they spent it all on booze and hookers it'd still be their money.

Honestly I really, really hope that Dust could get big, I think it has potential in itself...just the players are what I see a lack of potential in. But I do know lots of people who play console games and have thirsted for something with more "depth" or "meaning" so it will hopefully do good. But, I doubt it.

Oh, so you need to unlock various soldier archetypes to experience different play styles?

What do you think the LoL model is exactly?

Even though we can bombard an area from orbit.

I frankly I am a little disappointed that we can't suicide gank the dust bunnies by crashing our ships into them on the ground.

Now that would look as funny as hell, you are happily killing people in Dust and the next thing you know a 1.4 KM long mach for example crashes head first into the ground, killing most of your team mates Big smile

Any spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors are because frankly, I don't care!!

The F2P + cash shop model is super successful and is quickly becoming the norm for MMOs and will continue to infiltrate other genres. CCP is smartly aggressive for giving it a go on consoles, where it's had few attempts but some decent success. The game has to be good enough to back it up, though, and in a really crowded FPS market, it's tough. Going free to play is the best way to infiltrate that market, because then, unsure consumers won't hesitate because of a price tag. And games that rely on cash shops often make really good revenue. The lower income per person is easily surpassed by the expanded user base.

Honestly, I hope to hell it works. It will help to finance both itself and Eve Online, create a more enveloping universe, and potentially create more excitement for this kind of game.

Profits?

1. It is free to play
2. It is free to download
3. NONE of the microtransactions affect balance, they are all cosmetic.
4. FPS players don't bank sit

Profit, no, it is unlikely they can recoup the cost of development much less ongoing operations and support; even with using unpaid employees for customer service.

Nope, we are not subsidizing an investment, we are funding a boat anchor.

You know who is laughing all the way to the bank is Sony, what a win win for them, they got an exculsive, will sell some new consoles and some dumb company built a game for their platform with no hope of making a profit.

I thought Sony were covering the development costs when the game was complete.

EVE is a game built from the ground up to be subscription based. Hell, there's an in game market centered on it. This was before the rise of free to play.

EVE is just better as a sub based game rather than a free one.

Keep telling yourself that.

I'd rather pay a set amount per month for all the content in a game than play the game for free and have to throw chunks of cash sporadically for specific content. Mind you, I don't believe in supporting segregated content where useless fluff gets more priority from the devs than actual gameplay because the fluff is what brings the money and is, therefore, the smarter thing to manage time for.
