Im getting into this now, and I like it much more than either mining or playing market pvp (even though I feel PI will make me have to at some point). Ive been reading lots on resources, P1-P4 and anything PI related.

One thing that remains a bit confusing is how to go about refining lower resources into higher ones. I have a chart that tells what each resource and its related ones are for upgrading, its just that it doesnt say if these materials can be found on the same planet, or will as I assume take getting them from other planets.

Basically, if I want to make a P4 material, can I get the resource components off the same planet?

Most lvl 4 productions will make you pull resources from other planets. There are some that will give some up to lvl 3. But most times you need to pull other resources from the other planets. Sometimes you can find all the resources you need in the system or warp or two away from your main area of operations.

Thanks, this is what I was thinking. So how do you go about combining the materials to make the higher tier product?

By using advanced factories. Basically to make P2 or P3 you will need 2 P1 materials (or 3 P1 mats for a few P3 items). Then its just a simple matter of setting the schematic on the advanced factory, and routing in the P1 mats.

So for example:
Planet A you extract and manufacture Water (p1).
Planet B you extract and manufacture Electrolytes (p1).

You export goods from Planet A and planet B, and import them into planet C.

Planet C has an advanced factory, that converts water and electrolytes into coolant (p2). Same thing with P3 manufacturing.

In the above example yes you can extract these two p1 goods on a single planet, and use an advanced factory on the same planet to make the P2. Or you can export water on planet A, and import to plant B which is extracting electrolytes. Planet B would then have an advanced factory on it to make the coolant.

Oh ok, I see. Didnt know you could import to planet. Makes a lot more sense now. So far it doesnt seem as intensive as doing market pvp to make a profit. Things look to sell at good prices when you reach P4

Yea I have been giving this a study for a bit. I guess im shooting for the POS fuel as I feel that is something that is in demand.

Oh it gets to be pretty damn complicated and can be very intensive at times. if you are just doing a bit of PI because its there then its pretty simple stuff. Once you start getting into multi character massive deployments and trying to maxamize daily planet yields, keeping taxes to a minimum, buying mats you might be short on, trying to manufacture P4 goods that use 3 P3 items that use 3 P2's on a single factory planet, and so on it can start to get very complicated. But its alot of fun if that this type of thing entertains you.

I think its great for a person like me who has no interest in doing mining. Fully understanding the differences between this game and mass effect, ill say that this game has great meta-games like PI that go way beyond the boring minis in M.E. Plus I like that I can set extraction periods anywhere up to two weeks to accomodate the other things I do in game.

This is the diagram I use, gives you the materials breakdown for every p4 product from p0 up, and tells you what worlds they can be found on. But yes, if you're making P4 you will absolutely have to move goods between planets, no exceptions.

Yes, I have a similar one that was created from this format that is very useful. And as there is no avoiding exporting/importing to other planets, for an early starter is doing the shipping myself viable? I started out a bit willy nilly and I have the skills trained to III, but I dont have launchpads set up and adding would put my power grid over cap.

This is oddly enough, very fun
