Can a single character make POS fuel reasonably easily?

I'm new to running a POS aside from gathering moon goo and refueling them. I wanted to look into making my own pos fuel from PI, but the number of components and paying the export taxes seems like it may be a net loss in time over just buying the fuel and doing something more profitable with that time.

My question is can a single character produce POS fuel without too much hassle or importing to planets? Will I need one of each planet type to do it?

I wouldn't object to buying one of the components if necessary.

I'm just running a small POS by the way but would like to be able to run larger/more of them from it if possible.

You can make the fuels from planets with only a couple planets if you want but in the end the bulk cost of POS fuel comes from ice and its subsequent refined products, not from planet-made goods.

It is nearly impossible to do it in hisec. You will find the concentration of Ionic Solutions (for Coolant) especially low in hisec.

On the other hand, in -1.0 w-space, I was extracting freighters full of the stuff monthly.

You can make robotics on a single planet (plasma) but the yields tend to be pretty low. You basically have to run 4 cycles with each cycle being 1 - 5 days for each material.

Basicaly this means a 10 day cycle for mechanical parts, 10 day cycle for robotics, then robotics start getting created and repeat (so the first 20 days no robotics will be made). In null or a wh you could get more out of it obviously, but this is the best approach if you want to do single planet robotics.

Enriched uranium can be made on plasma planets as well. Coolant can be made on gas, and your additional mechanical parts can come from the robotics planet (as you can get much more mechanical parts off a plasma then consumer electronics, the chiral structures are a *****).

So 3 plasmas for robotics and mechanical parts, 1 plasma for enriched uranium, 1 gas for coolant and you're good to go. You'll make fare more per month exporting all the P1's to a factory planet and paying the tax just so you know.

If you train up all three character slots on your account in PI you can pull off the full chain of POS fuel products by yourself.

This is not recommended if you are doing PI in high sec, as the taxes on your factory planets as well as the lower extraction rates will make the whole setup inefficient.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.

It is possible to fuel a large POS tower with eleven PI planets in high sec although obviously you will have to obtain the ice products as well either by mining them yourself or purchasing them. Therefore you're going to need two pilots trained up to do it. The planetary resources deplete/move about every few days so it's not an even flow of materials. You need to select good planets preferably in close proximity to each other. Therefore I have to disagree with Tau's comment as I do this myself with no problems. Tau Cabalander is usually totally correct but to err is to be human. Blink

As regards the economics of producing the PI materials needed yourself in high sec even with the now exhorbitant taxes at customs offices I think it is still viable. I haven't done the maths on that but I believe it to be the case. Smile
