My drones are being lazy

Every so often my drones will actually attack rats that are attacking me/other drones, but most of the time they fly around my ship as if constantly in passive mode, yet the settings (which are now a pain to access) are set to aggressive.

I've already lost a few drones because of this and so far nothing I have tried has worked.
