One man's definition of abuse is different from another. How do you define the limits of what abuse is.

Same thing for trolling, yet we have people enforcing the no trolling rule.

Very fine example. Do you know how often I get called a troll when I am trying to have a simple discussion such as this one. Troll used to have real meaning back in the day, not to mention people actually worked at it. But over the years the definition got mud in the water to the point where a troll is simply somebody who disagrees with ones obviously ingenious idea. How often do we see people call troll on these forums each day?

Personally I call it abuse of the definition. What's to say that one day you happen to be bebopping through the forums downing and upping posts you agree or don't agree with and suddenly you get slapped with a ban because somebody didn't appreciate your downvote of their incredulous and noteworthy post. Even the moderators have been wrong on occasion.

What you're saying is make it perfect and 100% foolproof or don't bother at all. Nothing can be done that way since *human behavior*. But more to the point, is there more good than bad? I think so:

Best case scenario: It works.
Worst case scenario: You just ignore it (similarly to the likes system)

As long as sorting threads won't be mandatory, the abuse cases won't matter much.

The likes system works to a certain extent already: sure we get some posts liked for the wrong reasons, but more often than not, posts with more likes stand out. We just don't have tools to actually get to those faster. And here are my main issues with the likes system which devalue searching for them:

Searching for "most liked" posts would seem like a waste of time since it is restricted to "going upwards only" and very timezone-dependent.
