Insta-lock on a nano-fitted Vigil?

I'm still trying to figure out how to survive low sec. Ran into a gate camp with my nano-fitted Vigil. I had clicked on warp to jump to the star gate I wanted to travel through, saw two reds as I got out of warp and spammed jump like no tomorrow, and a second later I found myself in high sec. I'm trying to get my head around the insta-locking on my frigate and pod. What counter-measures are there, besides using a covert cloaking ship? Coz I had no chance at all.

Could be sebo'd with boosters. Thats just unlucky but no the norm on most days. when you know your ship is going down start spamming warp to a celestial to save your pod.

It is the norm actually. Standard gatecamp fleets have a sebo legion with sebo subsystem. It can catch anything (assuming no lag) right down to a nanod interceptor.

Are you sure you didn't get smart bombed? Check your lossmail.

Kaivar Lancer, I checked your killboard and you were indeed killed by a smartbombing 'geddon. They let the bombs off just as you were landing - there was no way you could have survived it. You were dead as soon as you hit "Warp To"...

In the future, it may serve you to take note of where these sorts of gatecamps are being held. Set up a tactical safespot 200km above the gate and 1 200km directly blow. 9/10 times when you warp to your first tactical, they'll see you on DScan and let off their bombs. If they don't, you can always warp to the 2nd tactical - it'll look like you're warping to the gate and they'll let their bombs off.

If there is one thing that never happens is getting killed by insta-lockers when you land on the gate. What did happen is that you got smartbombed. And smartbombing campers are unfortunately not that rare in low. The only way to avoid them is not jumping at 0 on gate and if you spot em take an other route because you ain't going through in a small ship.

If you can manage 2k shield HP with at least 30% resists across the board you should be able to get past most solo-campers.

I always fit an MSE to my frigs if I think smartbombers are a possibility.

Usually they still get you to armor but the MSE saves you from instapops.

Game ticks are 1 each second. If your ship can warp before 1 second even infinite scan resolution would prevent being tackled because both actions woudl be processed same time. What can happen is you being poped since the damage is still applied on that second.

Perhaps it's time to get either a) a scouting alt or b) avoid Amamake. I mean, if it doesn't work the first five times aye?

haha, the gate camp wasn't Amakake / Hek. I'm only dying around Amakake coz I ninja loot player wrecks in my Vigil. It's good money for a low SP character, and fun too!

That is the spirit we like. Welcome to EVE!
You may consider fitting a MWD instead of AB and polycarbon/low friction nozzle rigs for better agility.

Thanks. I've considered an MWD but doesn't that decrease the time it takes for other people to lock you? Also since the Vigil is so freaken fast, I tend to overshoot wrecks when I use an MWD.

This is my ninja loot / salvage fit for FW zones:

Low slots:
Warp core stabs x 3

Mid slots:
1MN AB
2 x cheap cap rechargers

High slots:
3 x Salvager I

Rigs:
3 x small low friction nozzles

All up it's only about 1.1M isk. I can usually make about 10-15M per hour so I don't care if I die, and I'm learning more about low sec. For example, I've learnt know how to use D-Scan to check for possible ships at a warp destination (as well as to find juicy player wrecks to loot).

ATM there's a gate camp between Amamake and Osoggur. There's about 6+ wrecks floating around, a few of them elite. I managed to loot one before one of the gate campers locked on and took 80% armor, but I got away this time. :)

Train evasive maneuvering 5; a nanoed frigate will never get locked in lowsec
Don't try to burn away/gatecrash like a moron; just warp.

There have a been a lot more smartbomb gate camps in lowsec of late. Rather annoying to see the disco balls going off with wrecks all around when warping through.

As a rule of thumb, never warp to 0 on a gate.

Hey all. I'm still getting my butt whipped in low sec, especially around Amamake. I keep dying once I jump into the system. During the 30s of cloakiness, I look for the most straight-on celestial body and warp. But gate campers keep on insta-locking me. I thought it might be smart bombs, but my last 2-3 kill mails show that I was killed with normal weapons. I'm thinking of replacing my warp core stabs with nanos, and putting my stabs into my cargo until I'm past that gate. I will give this a try.

Okay, I added small shield extenders to my mids for some tank, and withstood the first blast. Then I was warp scrambled and died, haha.

So I will now try a warp stab fit with tank.

To be totally honest in Vigil what you'd need to survive insta locking T3's is more tank and stabs. If you have nano's they'll still instapop you. And if you don't have stabs they'll still have you pointed in case the first shot didn't get you. Low sec is a nasty place.

Thanks for the advice. I finally got past the gate camp. The gankers congratulated me haha.

My fit:

Low:
Warp core stabs x 3

Mid:
Meta small shield extenders x 3

Withstood the first blast very easily.
