I'd hesitate to call it the neutral 'maintenance' because it doesn't really explain what's going on.

Certain tasks required for the universe to stay in motion that rely on static data - regenerating asteroid belts, turning player-created objects into permanent stationary objects (like building outposts), et caetera, et caetera, cannot be done while the server process that is using the static data is running. It's the way the entire system was initially designed. Many things are "permanent", a solar system node loads them when it starts, and can't reload them while it's running. Even if it could, it would need to do some extra things to notify players of the change.

As the above quoted dev blog mentions, they've been working on rewriting code that thinks of objects as "permanent" in such a way, so that they could be changed while the server is running. Many of such tasks no longer require that the server be stopped. (For example, Faction Warfare statistics are calculated and change a bit after downtime ends. So do average cross-Eve item prices you see in Unified Inventory.) But some still do, and until those are rewritten, we're going to have downtime and there's nothing anybody can do about it.

Aussie tear ninja. Who didn't see that one coming?

Tears will be shed and pants will need to be changed all round.

As an Australian player, the daily shutdown occurs a few hours after I come home from work. It's only 20-30 mins, but as a ninja salvager / looter, it really disrupts my EVE career as mission runners tend to log off half an hour before shutdown, and don't come back on until half an hour after the server is back online. And then it takes some more time for mission runners to start cycling through their missions and create some wrecks.

So as a ninja, I'm looking at an overall downtime of 90+ minutes. Remember that this is my free time after work. What should be a 3-hour joyfest of tears, is now reduced to an hour, simply because of the daily shutdown. Think of all those potential tears going to waste. :(

Well since you have probing skills already why not dual class into being a ninja salvager/plexer and make DT timing work for you by getting first crack at those yummy new PLEX spawns?

Yeah, I had one of those bastards in the top pic crawl into my house some years ago. It died from a liberal dose of insect spray.

Your math skills stink... 3 hours minus 30 minutes (top) equals 2hrs 30 mins...

For crying out loud it is only 30 mins... spend the time with your kids, wife or just fap if you're single... Shocked

I'd rather have 30 mins a day and know that the server health is checked daily than loose an hour a week with the higher risk of failure.

It also allows for introduction of fixes more often with less time spent on lengthy downloads in one session.

Grammatical error and spelling mistakes are included for your entertainment!
