Have people seen this: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game

It's basically the next-gen of VR headsets now that the tech has finally caught up to not suck. Carmack, Gabe Newell, Cliffy B have done their celebrity developer thing and endorsed it as a pretty exciting new thing and the kickstarter has over $750,000 towards its $250,000 goal in 2 days. So this is a serious deal, getting serious attention.

Thing is, I don't think FPS is the right crowd for this kind of tech- a head stuck on a body is always going to be stuck on a neck. To truly use VR properly, you need third person games with free-moving cameras. Even then, cross-talk in the eyes is common with detailed close-range stereoscopic scenes. The best 3D experience I've had at the cinema was Prometheus for its wide and deep environmental and space scenes.

Put this all together? EVE is the ideal implementation for this kind of tech. If CCP were to say they were going to try and implement compatibility with these headsets, I would buy one of those kits and happily be an early adopter/tester for it. CCP Devs definitely need to have a look at this and fans definitely should be getting excited.

I honestly don't see the benefit of this or how they could implement the technology, it would be the same as holding down your right mouse button and "look".

Yes, except you don't hold down your right mouse button. You just 'look'. EVE is a free-camera game, so having additional dimensions of freedom (i.e. the orientation of your head has a part in which way the camera faces) isn't going to break the game in any way.

Nor is it going to add anything immersive so again, pointless.

this device looks awesome, promising and can't wait to see it used in ALL future games, and see EVE support it as well!

Definitely would buy one to support testing for EVE.

Your posts are kinda pointless. You could say that you're skeptical and give your reasons. Or suggests ways that it could be better. Or just state that virtual reality really isn't your thing. Maybe it's pointless for you, but there's plenty of people who are interested, including some high-profile industry guys.

It's a sad fact that I think it's around 10% of people just can't deal with stereoscopy. I'd hope there'd be a non-stereoscope option and as Johnny Chung Lee demonstrated very effectively (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw) even parallax has an effective 3D effect without any crosstalk problems- all you need is decent head-tracking.

The other thing is that you're getting such a wild field of view that normally can only be achieved with racks of expensive monitors and specialised environments. The only thing missing that would make it extra-special would be some eye-tracking (which includes the potential for LOD based on eye focus, which could make large scenes with very high detail render awfully fast by only rendering the detail that can be seen).

I just did gave you my reasons why I don't think why it would work and no, I don't think it won't work with a game like EVE.

Well, thanks for contributing. I'm with the crowd who does find full field-of-vision and 3D experiences more immersive in general, but it's good to be mindful that it isn't for everyone. I'm sure CCP will factor this in over how much effort they may or may not put into it.

As I said earlier, it's quite possible they may have a non-stereoscope mode and that parallax + good head-tracking will be convincing by itself, not to mention that wide field of view.
