Why are people on EVE so hostile and negative?

It is not Eve per se.

It would seem that with the 'anonymity' and 'freedom' provided by the internet, folk who would not normally feel able to spout bile because of the consequences if they did so to a person's face, think they can get away with being vile on the internet.

Sad really.

I disagree, I am every bit the unpleasant, offensive, unfriendly person I appear to be.

Other day I played Candyland with my 6-year old cousin. He bumped me back to the licorice swamp where I was stuck for two turns just when I was one more space away from the candy cane castle. He won the game and laughed at me.

Its obvious.

Today few people have religion, if there is no religion in society, "morality" is just a figment of the imagination, there is no "right and wrong" for people who do not think they "will be held to account for the things they have done" (Quoting Denzel Washington from the Book of Eli) .

And so that's why many Eve players come across as angry, atrocious, bad, baneful, base, beastly, calamitous, corrupt, damnable, depraved, destructive, execrable, flagitious, foul, harmful, hateful, heinous, hideous, iniquitous, injurious, loathsome, low, maleficent, malevolent, malicious, malignant, nefarious, no good, obscene, offensive, pernicious, poison, rancorous, reprobate, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, spiteful, unpleasant, unpropitious, vicious, vile, villainous, wicked, wrathful, and sinful.

Answer is "Elementary Dear Watson" (Quoting some guy from another movie Bear )

Exactly how many wars over the course of history had nothing to do with religion versus those that were because of religion?

The worst come to mind WWI , WWII and the Atheist Communists killed over 100 mil, but its ok, cos they don't think they'll be held to account and they'll just get away with it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Book_of_Communism

1. Maybe you take things to personally?

2. Maybe you're doing things that earn you hostility and negativity?

3. Maybe Eve is stuffed with people who enjoy griefing others because they feel griefed IRL.

4. Eve just has a lot of jerks that play it because CCP supports mechanics that reward people for being asshats.

Just some ideas.. I ran into quite a few major jerks early in my playing days.. I still remember doing the Dagan mission in the Sisters of Eve arc.. was still VERY new to the game - probably on my 7th day of playing or thereabouts. I had no skills, was brand new, didn't even know how the game worked too well yet. Had only the vaguest sense of can flipping after reading these forums excessively for several days. So anyway this guy scans me down (didn't even know you could do that then and had no idea people could jump into your "missions"), jumps into my Dagan mission after I've been fighting Dagan for close to 30 minutes trying to wear down his tank.. slaughters Dagan.. loots the corpse and then tries to ransom it to me for 100 million ISK. All this when I had about 5 million ISK to my name. I realized then and there that some people in this game just get their kicks from griefing people. They like to claim they're creating just a harsh environment that is all Eve-ish and such, but the truth is they're just pricks using this game's mechanics as an excuse to act this way. And even if I was a vet, I wouldn't have been able to come get retribution on him without sacrificing my ship because he hadn't flipped my can or done anything to incur GCC.

So... the good news.. there are corps out there that aren't full of asshats like this. Find one, get to know them, learn from them, keep an open mind, and then enjoy the game. Because other than the thrill of learning a new game, the early game sucks, especially when you're dealing with the scum that like to prey on noobs.

You can believe that if you want, since it serves your need to act out this way yourself. Sometimes a smile is actually a smile.

To answer the title question without reading anything else that came after it; people sometimes forget that this is just a video game. Once you invest as much time into something that is as negative as the mods have allowed these forums to become, you start to seem bitter and jaded and it just becomes easier and easier to fall into that role. But that's the life of a forum warrior. You can never stop posting, no matter what. No matter how petty or insignificant your argument is, you keep on beat-beat-beating that dead horse because as soon as you stop posting, someone else is going to post something else. Now, as for why the mods allow it? I'll let you decide. Bear

It doesn't really bother me that some people act like pirates or scum, it tends to add atmosphere to the game.

"Steal/Destroy all your stuff" etc, isn't that big of a deal, because it's just a game.

I draw the line, however, at the mocking of people "in real life" when it's not appropriate. The Goons making fun of RL deaths (BoB e.g.) or their leader harassing and encouraging others into making someone commit suicide. This is just bullshit, and anyone that does it needs to find a new hobby.

Nothing to add to that... sad how a (arguable) superior stance in a game can bring out the worst in human beeings.
