  • Compared to other MMO's the Eve playerbase is extremely monocultural. Overwhelmingly Eve players a cisgendered heteronormative caucausian males and the culture reflects that. Women add empathy to a society and diversity forces us to learn to interact with people who are different. This is not the case in Eve.

  • As a "hardcore" MMO we like to play up our HTFU attitude to be seen as cool space sociopaths. Empathy and charity are seen as weak and not in the spirit of the game.

  • Because of the reputation as a haven for awful people it attracts awful people. If you're an Eve Online player you likely fail to interact in normal society and instead seek out groups full of people who are equally as awful as you.

  • Because of the corelation between science fiction nerds and atrophied social skills most people who play Eve turn to this community because of their inability to empathise, understand and socailse with human beings. Eve allows you to replace those feelings of social ostracisation with satisfaction that you're making people angry, thus giving a false sense of adequacy that is otherwise lacking from your life.

One question. Did you get that degree online?

It shouldn't have, owing to it's obviousness, but...^^That^^ made me lol, hard, IRL.

Star Wars: the Old Republic may not be EVE. But I'll take the sound of dual blaster-pistols over "NURVV CLAOKING NAOW!!!11oneone!!" any day of the week.

Pretty much this. Also: OP hangs in the wrong locals. The symptoms listed above sound pretty hisec to me. If I get killed I usually start a convo to say GF and to ask some PvP pointers. No-one has ever reacted negatively to that in my experience. Now try and convo a random hisec mission runner and ask him ANYTHING that will cost him some mild effort: you will get barked at. So what do you do? You hang with the people who tried to kill you, because instead of the heartless pirates they roleplay as, they are just gamers having fun. People that have fun are more relaxed then those that experience lots of stress.

I wouldnt call it hostile, more that there's a very low tolerance for petty whining and deliberate stupidity along with hundreds of different views on how those two terms should be defined.

I think that a lot of the hostility and anger in EVE is not real.
The hostility is the nature of the game. Once its all said and done is anybody really hostile?
If so then lulz at them for letting a game take over.
Its just the fun of fighting back at other people...but after said fight is over hostilities no longer exist any further than a RP stand point.

in my opinion

Because there are all these people who think all these people want EVE Online to be hello kitty online, when in reality, many of them just want a comprehensive gaming experience that does not favor one group over another.

So if one group is clever and the other one isn't, there should be rules in-game so that neither is favored?

There will always be groups and play styles which will be more rewarding than others and thus, favoritism is inevitable.

Unless you play Hello Kitty Online of course, then they would all just be equally worthless.

I read somewhere the average age of an EVE player is 25 or something so why do they act like teenagers.

I'm on EVE and sometimes I feel like I'm on 4chan or Twitter.

Averages can be very misleading. A couple of players who are 75 yo would skew the average. A better statistic would be the mode or the median.

But along those lines, there is some of the worst, most sophomoric, and hateful trash talk in 0.0 local. Particularly in the NPC regions where the populace is not governed by corp rules. Some of those players manifest serious psycholoical disturbances that are consistent with adolescent male inadequacy.

Having said that, most of the people I have met in-game, have been nice. Some of them have an elitist attitude, but that's not so bad. Even the guys who have ganked me can be nice. In fact, some of the lo sec pirates have given me my stuff back (whatever survived the gank).

So look around. Unless you are meeting up with the Dirt Nap corp out in null, you should be able to find nice people to interact with.

It is not Eve per se.

It would seem that with the 'anonymity' and 'freedom' provided by the internet, folk who would not normally feel able to spout bile because of the consequences if they did so to a person's face, think they can get away with being vile on the internet.

Sad really.

Its obvious.

Today few people have religion, if there is no religion in society, "morality" is just a figment of the imagination, there is no "right and wrong" for people who do not think they "will be held to account for the things they have done" (Quoting Denzel Washington from the Book of Eli) .

And so that's why many Eve players come across as angry, atrocious, bad, baneful, base, beastly, calamitous, corrupt, damnable, depraved, destructive, execrable, flagitious, foul, harmful, hateful, heinous, hideous, iniquitous, injurious, loathsome, low, maleficent, malevolent, malicious, malignant, nefarious, no good, obscene, offensive, pernicious, poison, rancorous, reprobate, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, spiteful, unpleasant, unpropitious, vicious, vile, villainous, wicked, wrathful, and sinful.

Answer is "Elementary Dear Watson" (Quoting some guy from another movie Bear )

Exactly how many wars over the course of history had nothing to do with religion versus those that were because of religion?

I'm negative because I love EvE, and I hate seeing it stagnate due to CCP stuck between two separate player castes that are constantly threatening to unsubscribe if their respective and completely conflicting desires are not met.

I am a carebear, and I support High Sec ganking and PvP. Just please, don't blow up my Hulk*. **<3 **
