While I am stashing spare ISK away for my "industrial" alt, I have been reading a fair amount about invention as this is the route I eventually plan to take. Now the question ... Is there a difference at all between using a BPC and a BPO? If I understand correctly neither get used up, so is there a benefit of using one over the other?

Thank you.

For invention process itself you use only BPCs which do get used up.

BPOs are only used to make BPCs via copying.

You have to use a BPC, it's impossible to use a BPO for invention. The requirement of a BPC is why many people who invent either have their own POS with copy labs or they're being supplied by someone that does. Buying copies in contracts is possible but it's not reliable and it cuts into your profits.

Either way, success or fail, you lose your BPC, your datacores and the decryptor item if you choose to use one.

Ahh, that makes a little more sense, thank you for the answers.

You can use an Unresearched BPO to copy for your BPC's, research level has no impact on the invention process, however if you're going to build the T2 items, and build the T1 item you need for the T2 Item then it's beneficial to run some ME at least to cut down on waste.

Very important that - use a straight copy BPC from an unreasearched BPO and have the same chances to invent.
What makes a difference in the stats are your skill level, the base material (a named variant is preferred) and decryptors.

You can use any BPC of course, but no need to have copies from a highly researched BPO for invention. A BPC of ME 0 and PE 0 is basically what you want for invention.
