I have read the debate on Margin Trading Scams and regardless of whether this is a Scam or a Valid Use of game mechanics, I would like to see it changed.

There is no way to know if a buy order is legitimate even with market knowledge, due diligence, research, etc... Unlike most scams there is no way to know if the buy order is really a buy order until after one has been burned. There is no way to know you are taking a risk.

The order should somehow indicate that it is a margin order (maybe appear in another color) or have the buy order only reflect only the number of items that can be paid for from escrow.

The bottom line is i should have the choice of taking a risk or not, purchasing an item to fill an active buy order should not be a risk.

This is an abuse of the game mechanics at the least and I would not argue with anyone who claims it to be a scam. It needs to be corrected.

Honestly, most margin trading scams are pretty easy to spot. You can't be 100% sure without trying to sell to them, true, but the circumstances under which you can pull one off are specific enough that they tend to stand out pretty plainly to anyone with a decent market knowledge.

Still, that's not to say that the Margin Trade skill couldn't use tweaking. What I would like to see is for the mechanics to be changed so that you have to have enough ISK between the escrow and wallet to cover the cost of an order, otherwise it pops automatically. That way you can still use the skill for it's intended purpose as long as you're putting up multiple buy orders. (As long as you've got enough ISK in your wallet to cover any one order completely you're free to put up orders without having to tie up enough ISK to cover all of them completely.)

That keeps most of the legitimate uses available (for the three people in EVE who use it Roll), but also makes margin trading scams impossible to pull off since any order on the market is guaranteed to have enough ISK backing it to go through.

I think that is a great idea Raphael

Now that I know these are out there I will have to consider my choice as a trader,. It seem to easy to lose ISK...this one cost me about 800 million isk and months of work. I had no idea you could put up a buy order with out the isk to fulfill it.

The worst part is I did not write down the phony buyers name, at least I could have hunted him down in game and gotten some simple revenge Blink
