Key caps are one thing but the switches under them are what gives a keyboard its "feel."

The cherry switches mentioned above are one of the more popular types of mechanical key switches like I mentioned before. Mechanical were popular quite a while ago before they started putting out these cheap rubber membrane crap silent keyboards. Mechanical keyboards are making a big comeback lately especially with gamers. Something this cool really should have nice switches.

Also from everything I've ever read about zboards they are terrible quality with an awful mushy feel to them.

Make a keyboard like this for EvE and you may be on to something.

OMG OP this is great.

I would buy one of either, as long as it would not override my keyboard.

Ok, all sounds great about the Cherry switches. Just got home from work. I'ma spend a couple hours mocking up the separate controller once more, a bit more nice with icons, etc. It looks like the separate controller might be the best avenue. As far as having your keyboard plugged in at the same time, would I need to consider that with programming or if another USB component enters a command that EVE can register while I'm in EVE will it read it no problem? I guess what I'm asking is do I need to worry about having multiple inputs on EVE?

I found a guy at work who might be able to handle the programming too, so once I get an idea how big the board will be I can design around that. Since we're doing just the box separately, I'm wondering if a box is perfect, or maybe some other shaped. Long, tall, round, hexagonal, wrist rest-- I'll come back with a few options.

Thanks for all the support guys. Let's make this happen.

===

Edit: So, with cherry switches, are they just what's under neath the keycaps? I can use the one manufacturer to create custom keycaps, but then use cherry switches for the bottom?

I use my Logitech G-13 with EVE and it works just fine. It is essentially just another keyboard.

I also love my G-13, highly recommended. As for keyboards I use my Steelseries modular Z-Board. I usually have the Battle for Middle Earth keyset since I love Toklien, but occasionally will have my Guild Wars set popped in since it is cool looking too. I think it would be easier and more affordable to convince Steelseries to make a EVE keyset than to make a dedicated keyboard although it has been some years since they have made a non-Blizzard set.

I clicked your link and spotted a picture of a baby deer!

Oh, and I like the idea of the big fat undock button on the keyboard.

OK, got an update for the mockup, as well as a potential gamebreaking idea. This could be real good.

First, here's the updated mockup for the controller itself. http://imgur.com/zdbIy

TOP 2 rows are neocom stuff: Wallet, Calculator, Overview Settings, Market, etc.

NEXT row is fleet broadcast stuff

In the middle is the drone stuff

Everything is self explanatory. I've been up all night working on this, so I was too lazy to make a legend. I'm going to update the OP with this mockup.

But here's the idea. What if we turned this into an app for your tablet and if you were to just simply connect your tablet via LAN and you could rock this in EVE without a big ol piece of hardware. I personally don't have a tablet, and would love a piece of hardware but as far as having an app for an MMO.... WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN DONE ALREADY?

The app could have animated buttons, custom background for corp/alliance, snap-to-grid type of deal where you can shift and move things around... oh, dear. It's endless.

Enjoy the mockup. I need sleep.

I have my first bank on my G-13 dedicated for the top half stuff on your design, the second bank for modules and combat orders, and the third currently for a num pad. I actually use the third bank more often than the second since I do a good amount of trading. I don't use the first bank all that often since I don't usually need to pull up tabs too often. Stuff like lock, set range, orbit, gate, etc. is on my second primary bank.

Could you also make a special caldari edition of your controller specifically for us, caldari? Because your concept is missing the most important button!

Been looking around a little, http://www.unifiedremote.com/ seems you can make your own remote(Layout) here..

its seems to be just basic XML coding

Having actual buttons to press is a more satisfying experience if you ask me. For instance I love a nice mechanical keyboard and don't care much for typing on my ipad.

Maybe I'm just an old-school geek but I love things with lots of buttons, knobs, dials, switches, meters and blinky lights.

My ideal EVE controller would look roughly like this: http://bit.ly/MUm8GD

After a long day at work and doing a lot of thinking on this, the primary goal will be to make something to have in the hands. I too would like something in my hands and on my desk. That being said, stuff like iclone and evetracker can't be the only thing available for EVE players. App devs get on dat ****.

Anyway, I'm continuing to collect resources for everything necessary. Dipstick wanted a mining laser button, whatever the **** that is, and a quit button has been mentioned twice. I'm not entirely convinced that a quit button is needed. It's like requiring a button on your keyboard to close browser windows. We hit that X on the upper right hand corner. At least I do. I play in windowed mode because I stream and full screen produces a flicker on the live video.

So, let's officially throw this up for a simple yay or nay on the Quit button. Are we trying to fit 5 horses in a race stall, or is a quit button very much needed?

Also, if you're very much interested in this project, go ahead and sub to this thread. This race will be a slow and steady one, but updates will continue to come and we'll git er dun.

Totally awesome project! I'm behind it 100%

@Sid Hudgens I'm a new school younger geek and I prefer mechanical keyboards too!

I'm more of a hardware kind of guy so if you need any help with anything please hit me up in game Pandora. I'd really love to be a part of this project and will definitl be buying one!

Lastly I too would enjoy a quit button, although preferably somewhere out of the way it with a plastic cap like missile launch buttons (of the 'jump' button on the "drake pilots keyboard").
