Quick way to distinguish anomaly type?

Hi all -

Just got into exploration and I've been working my way around high sec space looking for anomalies. Vast majority seem to be wormholes, but that's not the point of my question.

Is there any way to tell what type of anomaly is present in a system without scanning it down (50%+ signal strength)? (Is there a skill that increases the ability to distinguish?)

I only have experience using combat and core scanner probes, and use a 5 point scan since its quicker to move the probes in from the 4 directions.

Are deep space probes any different?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately no, but you're not totally without options. Each site has a specific signal strength. So if you start to remember the percentages of the signals when you first scan them (say a full lock with 5 core scanner probes at 32 au scan range), you can toss out the ones you aren't interested in.

One more important fact though, different sites share signature 'bandwidths'. Meaning that just because you find a site you don't like, that that particular BW doesn't have anything interesting to you. So don't toss out a percentage the first time you find a WH.

If you want some more info on it, along with some handy spreadsheets, check the mission and complex forum for St Mio's Deep Space Probe guide.

In general, the harder a signature is to scan down, the better the stuff you get from it. There are exceptions, of course.

Also, you only need to get a sig to 25% to see its type. The most profitable sites are Radar and Gravimetric Sites, especially Radar because you can usually find easy to sell and good loot in it. Graimetric sites need to be mined out and may already be occupied when you find them. Magnetometric sites are just salvage, not worth scanning down at all in hi-sec (and not often worth doing so in any other k-space) and ladar sites need gas mining and are also not very profitable in hi-sec.

Just to clarify

Anoms all scan instantly to 100%
Signatures need to be narrowed down and include grav, mag, radar, ladar, and unknown categories

As a side note, you might find it hard to find things other than wormholes in high-sec. There are a lot of people all looking for the same things and sites will get scanned down and completed quite quickly.

Deep-space scanner probes have a much bigger range (256 AU iirc) compared to core probes (32 AU) so you can examine the entire system in a shorter space of time.

Skills wise, there are skills that improve the strength of your probes, which will indirectly decrease the time until you get a 25% hit and can tell what the site is. I forget what they are called though =(.

^^^ This. In my experience, it's rare to find a decent signature in hisec. If you really want to find good signatures, you either need to start probing shortly after downtime, or to try your luck in lowsec (or nullsec, of course, but it's tricky to do that latter without being in a nullsec corporation). Best advice for the new beginner would be to try and time your eve-playing such that you have an opportunity to look around shortly after downtime, perhaps on a weekend if that's an awkward hour for your time zone.

Be warned, however, that some of the signatures have spawns too dangerous for a new player to handle. Warp in at 100 before you do anything else, and be ready to run if it looks dicey.

These 2 skills will help to scan exploration sites quickly.

Astrometric Rangefinding = 10% increase to scan probe strength per level.
Astrometric Pinpointing = Reduces maximum scan deviation by 10% per level.

Scanning Rigs will help a lot. There are 3 different sizes for various ship class - Small, Medium and Large. Each rig has 2 versions available.

'Gravity Capacitor Upgrade' = ship modification designed to increase a ship's scan probe strength.
Tech 1 rig = Scan Strength Bonus 10 %
Tech 2 rig = Scan Strength Bonus 15 %

Hardwiring Implants can also help. There are 3 types that affect probe scan strength.

Hardwiring - Poteque Pharmaceuticals 'Prospector' PPH-0 = 2% stronger scanning strength with scan probes.
Hardwiring - Poteque Pharmaceuticals 'Prospector' PPH-1 = 6% stronger scanning strength with scan probes.
Hardwiring - Poteque Pharmaceuticals 'Prospector' PPH-2 = 10% stronger scanning strength with scan probes.

The type of ship and equipment used along with the level of exploration skills will also make a big difference. Always try to use the best equipment available, Sisters of Eve probe launcher and probes is the best.

Currently there is only 3 types of ships available with bonus for scanning. T1, T2 (Covert Ops) Frigates and T3 Cruisers. The Frigates lack the amount of slots available to fit up all exploration, defensive and offensive mods needed to complete most exploration sites. The T3 Cruisers are very expensive.

With high exploration skills, rigs fitted, implant installed and SoE equipment, just about any ship type can be used.

Cosmic Signature
Radar, Ladar, Gravimetric and Magnetometric sites will show type at 25% signal strength.
'Unknown' = Wormhole or Combat site will show type at 75% signal strength.

Cosmic Anomaly
Anomaly = Mini combat site will always show 100% signal strength.

Since there's a lot of players doing exploration, especially on the weekend, the trick is to be able to quickly scan and complete the various sites asap. One of the main things is location. Check the Starmap and look for areas with low population count, amount of jumps, npc kills, etc. There's still a few areas of high security with not many explorers.

Good luck to you.
