Due Diligence: The Ascension of James 315, Protector of Halaima, Saviour of Highsec

With the successful closing of Halaima Miner Bumping IPO ROUND 3 and a little free time on my hands, I found myself curious about the humble origins of Eve's greatest statesman/entrepreneur. (Sorry, Sansha Kuvakei, you may have heads in jars but James has dignity. Get in line.)

There will be those who say that conducting due diligence and reporting on it after the fact of an IPO may seem like poor practice, lazy, or perhaps even stupid. To my inevitable critics, I can only respond: I am really, really bad at investing. What's your excuse?

I should also note that:
Due to stringent EvE API limitations, although the information provided to you in this document is obtained or compiled from sources believed to be reliable, or at least easy to find, Sun Win cannot and does not guarantee the accuracy, validity, timeliness, or completeness of any information or data made available to you for any particular purpose.

I am not responsible for any anxiety felt by clicking the through the terrifying CCP warning that awaits you if you click on any of the many, many links in this document.

Because my evidence consists mostly of material collected from primary sources (James' own writing), you should be prepared to set aside several hours to sift through all of what I've gathered. Whether you want to do this will be a factor of how much you've enjoyed the Halaima postings and how curious you are about the history of this terrible game. If you have and you are, then you are in for an extensive treat.

Neither the information nor any opinion contained in this document constitutes a solicitation or offer by Sun Win or my affiliates to buy or sell any securities, assets or services, but neither am I saying that you shouldn't randomly send me ISK.

On to what I've learned.

James 315 is probably best known for his work as a war reporter. Over the course of 700 days he chronicled the fall of the Band of Brothers at the hands of the Goons et al. (As a historical note, it's particularly poignant to compare the current corp tickers of people decrying James' analysis on day 500 with their corp tickers at the time as preserved by Eve Search.)

It was while reading over James' reporting work, that I come upon his dark criminal past. James 315 was the mastermind behind Currin Trading.

If you don't remember Currin Trading, it was the first truly successful Ponzi scheme, outstripping the Guiding Hand Social Club's 20 billion assassination and heist to the tune of 30 billion ISK. If you want to know more, I'll just let the man himself explain it. Currin Trading might have been the greatest Ponzi scheme in Eve history except that it was running in parallel to the Eve Intergalactic Bank, which would take as much as 671 billion ISK. Oh, by the way, it was James who exposed the EIB.

After the fall of the EIB, James moved on to the war journalism, previously discussed. Then he seems to go quiet (read: I couldn't be bothered to dig through his posting history on the old forums). His time in the wilderness ends with the publication of a bold manifesto on the subject of history's greatest monster: the high sec miner. He follows this up with a second more refined (longer) manifesto, published just months ago.

It doesn't take long for his next evolution. Two short months later, he his announcing the beginning of the social utopia/can't lose business opportunity that is The New Halaima Code of Conduct.

It is a fascinating slice of history to watch the transition from criminal mastermind to revolutionary to statesman. It is particularly instructive to see his realization that to combat the threat he saw, he would need to transmogrify from hunter to shepherd. This kind of transformation is, of course, fairly common but it normally happens across generations. James 315 accomplished it in mere years.

This document may contain "forward-looking information". These statements refer to future events or to the Saviour of Highsec's future performance. All statements other than statements of historical fact may be forward-looking statements. Forward-looking information involves known and unknown risks, that may cause the actual results of the Saviour of Highsec to be materially different from any future results, implied by the forward-looking information. Frankly, I wouldn't be too sure about the statements of historical fact either.

You're right, he's not. James315 would have written six posts. Blink

For some reason the article on the EIB you linked is dated 2008. Actually the fall of the EIB occurred in the summer of '06, following my crusade against it in the Market Discussions subforum (anyone here still around from those days?). The Great War-related stuff came afterward, followed by my "time in the wilderness" (years when I didn't play EVE much).

I have a feeling more people will be learning the importance of this transformation when the next uber-nerf to suicide ganking occurs Blink

I'd still invest. I remember following a lot of these back in the days of deployments and limited play-time. /nostalgia

Still waiting to see how big this Halaima endeavor gets.

So much for the second draft of history. Editing the OP to reflect the correct order of events.

Great write up Sun Win, I enjoyed the whole thing and some impressive digging up of the past.

The reference to his ponzi scheme he had previously let slip into a post of his in the last expansion, something to the effect of 'I havn't had this much fun since my ponzi' or some such. Although I'm not sure it was a slip as he has never hidden from his past, just deftly manouvered around the questions.

Now that all this in out in the open I think the important questions are:

When is the next write up on the progress of bringing order and when is the next expansion so I can throw some more money your way??

Is it too late to start a cult following? All hail the great James 315, the shepard of wayward miners and protector of highsec! Teach me your ways, oh great one!!

PS: Does my hooded cultist cloak come in the mail, or do I have to pick it up directly from the manufacturer?
