How Would It Work: Spaceship Turns

I like how there are a lot fo smart assed remarks about how ships move, but so few suggestions.

So tell us, in space how would a ship turn?

Would the ship have retro rockets on the front to help turning?
Would the retros be strong enough to spin the ship, or strong enough to actually effect its course?
Would the ship spin around and fire its main engines to change course?
Would the retros cause the ship to arc through a turn?
etc...

I thought you knew better than to try actual physics here.

Make all crew run to one side?

They toss a space anchor (same device as in giant secures) to the center of the turning circle.

Racing wheels and damps should be fine.

Retro rockets are used to slow down, not to turn. To turn in space they use attitude control jets that just spray a small amount of gas (usually nitrogen) to start the ship turning. Then a second spray in the opposite direction when ever they want to stop turning.

Gyroscope - like compass work. Massive ship's core doesn't rotate but engine(s) rotates around it into certain position / direction and start to push ship.

Though classical chemical rockets could be ok too.

This is Eve!!! We have engines capable of warping the space time continuum.

The ship never turns. Space does.

Current physics would require propulsion both to start the turn and negate the momentum generated -- a ship would use a rocket to start the turn, and then a second rocket, firing in the other direciton, to stop the ship and keep it from just...spinning.

That said, it's EVE we're talking about. Probably quantums.

I am sad that no artist takes some time and adds little maneuvring thruster effects on the ships. Just some little exhausts when the ship starts turning. The Enherji bomber already does have such effects. Wouldn't look as ridiculous as it does now. Eve is probably the spaceship game with the worst flight animations by far.

I have a dream. In this dream, an Eve ship does a 180° turn and fires its thrusters to slow down when deccelerating. It also keeps its speed without firing thrusters the whole time. Sadly it's just a dream.

Fins, wings and rudders. Why do you think Minmatar ships are so much more maneuverable?

Duh!

Notice how most ships have several rocket engines on the back? Simply turn off the engine on the right side to turn right, the left side to go left etc.

The answer to your question seems to be rather straightforward, I'd even dare to say it's staring you in the face.

According to contemporary physics, moving faster than the speed of light is impossible. Still, in New Eden the distance crossed between one planet and the next can be bridged in a shorter amount of time than light would take to travel between these points. That's where the warp drive comes in. As the word suggests, it warps the space around the ship, pulling the destination closer so that the distance in between it and the starting location is short enough for the ship to travel it in a set amount of time at a speed below that of the speed of light. The ship is essentially barely moving, beautifully illustrated by the fact it's always on the center of your screen, no matter the distance you seem to travel.

Moving around its axis happens in pretty much the same way. There are no thrusters, retro rockets or engines, it's all in the warp drive.

RCS (Reaction Control Systems) or OCS (Orbital Control Systems)

Or just a gyroscope
