y not?

give em bad tracking due to it not being a pvp weapon, same range and across the board damage with t1 modules, longer range and crystal specific damage (em/thermal) with t2 modules, or just higher across teh board damage and range bonbus of the t2 module with no crystal

y?

startrek did it in the new startrek movie; big ass romulan mining ship kickin the shtuffing out of the old school enterprise
starwars did it in a book, where they used mining ships to bore into dreadnaughts' to take control of them

i mean if mining lasers can bore a hole into rocks, whats to stop them from doing the same to armorplast? armor plates or shields?

justa thought, i know there will be trolls, but since it's obvious that they are about to buff the skiff and machinaw in defences, why not give em something other than drones to attack with

yes some people would complain about it, but who gives i think it'd be funny to see a fleet of skiffs killina battleship before concord shows up ina .5 system XD

While we're at it, let me reverse the polarity of Tractor Beams and let me hurl wrecks and asteroids around at enemy ships!

Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you.

I don't think Mining Lasers actually cut the stuff ships are made of.

Look at how thick the beam is. It is way to massive to carefully cut anything and when an Asteroid is depleting it shrinks until it is just simply gone. Also there is a vacuum funnel around the beam that sucks towards your ship.

I think the Lasers are designed not to damage the stuff ships are made of. They don't precision cut the rock but vaporize it to nothing and suck up all the ORE particles in the funnel like tractor beam.

It actually explains why shooting a laser gives you minerals, how they get back to your ship, where the asteroid goes and why it does no damage to a ships defenses.

The "Children" name fits. Go with it.

I think Alara is right, mining lasers don't have the power to break the defenses of our ships.

That would be too OP and basically break small ship PvP.

But... it sounds awesome as ****.

There should be special roid ships that mining lasers would work against.

strip miners should sever random modules from he target and transfer them into the attacker's cargo hold. *i'm in a hulk staeleing your shineys!*

PvP ships being shredded by mining lasers would be quite amusing.

How about use ore as ammo. Just like some one suggested switch polarization and hit some thing with rocks.

While I cannot truly see the mining laser doing more than mild thermal damage to a hull (an annoyance at best), I think someone should be able to tractor in wrecks and use them to form a 'shell' around their ship while standing still.

Pilot 1: Is that a ship?
Pilot 2: Nope, just a bunch of wrecks.
Pilot 1: Oh.
Pilot 2: Oh no! It's shooting at us. KILL IT WITH FIRE.
Pilot 1: My mining lasers, they do nothing to it! The shell, why the shell!?
Pilot 2: *static*

I'd agree with this if original post didn't use the letter 'Y' as if it was an actual word.

While that's a gag, I do like the idea of it damaging modules. Been always hoping for something to damage the modules to some extent on the target. Should be a counter to the overheat spammers ;P.

This sounds like it should be possible.

Train like it was new ore types:
Then use the crystals for that ore type.

Amarr shield
Amarr armor
Gallente shield
Gallente armor
Etc.

The whole point of the crystals being different for each ore type, is that the beam needs to resonate on the correct frequency range. The T2 crystals are just more specific and attuned, but require a more experienced operator.
Racial shields and armor aren't ore, so you need to adapt your gear to match the weapons grade energy output.

With the pathetic tank and high cost of exhumers and barges, noone would PvP in those by choice. That being said, if you don't have the choice you shouldn't be a defenseless child either.

It's not a pleasure yacht. Noone expects it to replace a battleship, but it should be able to do something here.

A pick-ax doubles nicely as a weapon. Interesting things could be done with a jackhammer two. 8)

That said, CCP wants mining ships to be weak. Then they will need protection/teamwork. The problem is they are two weak, which is somewhat being addressed.

What I would like to see are PvP mining ships that can small gang roam and mine. The Dominix is an old school example, and a better Dominix would mean more low-sec miners. CCP wants people in low-sec, but the risk vs. reward needs a lot of work.

As for tractor beams, offensive use (e.g. pull in a crow closer) has never been exclusively out of the question. It was one of the first questions asked about the module when it was announced. The answer was more or less maybe someday.
