Eve installed but will not start on Ubuntu 12.04...

Hello,

Trying to get Eve to run on Ubuntu 12.04. I know a lot of people have so not sure why I am having trouble. I use to linux from a development standpoint (as in RHEL, CentOS, Fedora) but not very familiar with running a GUI on linux (Ubuntu). I am starting to travel a lot for work and setup Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Vostro. I configured Wine and was able to install Eve without issue (I think). The installer completed and I am able to launch the "launcher" for eve. It checks for updates and provides the "PLAY" button. Once the "PLAY" button is enabled, I click it, but the game never launches. I see no errors in the system logs. I noticed on my main windows 7 desktop that I play eve on, even when I click the Play button there, it takes a minute for the game to launch. Not sure what causes that delay but perhaps something is timing out on Ubuntu? As mentioned, very familiar with CLI, not so much with the GUI. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

*EDIT

I should note I am new to Wine. Never tried to run Windows Apps on Linux before this either. Let me know any details you need from my specs. (This machine did run EVE with the original Windows OS it came with so Hardware should meet the requirements.)

No joy. I also tried the steps from:

Here

I will say, there is a slight change. I am able to get the login window to appear for a fraction of second. It then goes away either back to the launcher page or closes the wine virtual desktop (If I launched the ExeFile.exe directly). Here is the output from my run:

fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation (nil) 1 (nil) 0
fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation 0x48b000 0 0x32f31c 4
Network layer using: CarbonIO

Hopefully another idea?

Thanks again.

*Edit
I did also try uninstalling and re-installing eve.

Are you install in wine folder - corefonts vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 d3dx9 ?

It is installed in the wine folder. I have installed corefonts, vcrun* but not sue about d3dx9. I did not explicitly install that, assuming it is direct x 9 based on dx9? I will do some research on how to install that but I do not remember seeing that on any walk-through. I will update with the results.

Thanks!

download winetricks from http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks/
WINEPREFIX="wine_folder " sh -e ./winetricks corefonts vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 d3dx9

and may be msxml3

Thanks for the steps. I ran something similar last night, minus the direct x 9 part; curious if this does the same thing in your steps minus dx9?

winetricks corefonts crun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010

I never specified the WINEPREFIX basically. I have never used winetricks before this and I am just trying to learn all the parameters. I will not be near my Ubuntu machine until this evening my time, I will run your instructions when I get home from work.

Thanks!

Precisely the same S#IT happens on my computer!

Login window shows for a fraction of a second and everything closes, wine exits.

I have no problems with ALSA. I donotwant pulseaudio or the likes to enter my system. I'm just a hysterical red-eyed fanatic, nothing more.
BTW, in log messages it's just HD-Audio on a videocard, which I do not use since I have no HDMI audio hardware to connect to it,
the other sound device is functioning in wine, and I use no microphone yet Oops so I'm just satisfied with audio,
what I may be missing with my setup?

The problem is with EVE exiting without any mesasges to interpret and no idea to fix it.
But I will try new wine version anyway as you say and will report here in this post, just later.

And, please, dear AfterShok, tell us: are you still able to log in to the latest version of EVE client under wine? At present time?
If so, what version of wine do you use? Is it 1.5.9, as you advice? Is it vanilla wine version or some modification?
And BTW, what graphics driver/libs do you use?

I use proprietary fglrx - no success :(

i use Fedora 16 - 3.4.5-1.fc16.x86_64 kernel
wine 1.5.9 with T3 ship patch
pulseaudio 0.9.23
r6900 - 12.4 proprietary

You have a problem with ALSA, because when you see the login screen (after 1 sec), EVE to start playing music.
Put in the wine settings via what device to deduce a sound.

Sorry for not responding earlier; a few project roll-outs for work. I still have not been able to run eve even with d3dx9. I have tried to get it to work with Playonlinux but still no joy. Every tool I try to use ends with:

Network layer using: CarbonIO

I know Carbon is the graphics engine not sure why it would reference the "Network layer" in conjunction with graphics. It outputs this line right as the login screen appears and goes away, then nothing. Any ideas?

I am getting a very similar error

I am using the newest wine version and am overwriting the d3dx9 dll to native. I installed (with winetricks) corefonts,vcrun2005, vcrun2008, vcrun2010 and msxml3.
I also set the WINEARCH=win32, but didn't change the prefix, the default should be right.

This is really bugging me, because so many people seem to have no problem with it...

I'm not sure what you mean... Which video driver I am using? I got a Radeon HD4670 and I am using the radeon driver (that's the free one). Maybe I would need the proprietary one, but I had trouble with that... I will try to fix that, maybe that will fix the other problem.

Edit: the proprietary driver didn't help, so I will turn it off again. I also tried some things from otehr posts, but they do not seems to be aout this problem.

Wine version doesn't matter too much, I got the CarbonIO error when my video drivers were messed up.
