Today there was a discussion about tournament format on stream. Why not make it double elimination?

Double elimination has two brackets, one winners bracket and a losers bracket. When a team loses it drops to the losers bracket and can continue to progress. After losing its second match in the losers match it will be eliminated. Call winner loser bracket L and winner winners bracket W. The (semi-) final is between L and W, if W wins he is the winner of the tournament. However, if W loses he drops to losers brackets and next plays L for a second time.

The result is that basically everyone is allowed to lose one match. The final pairup is slightly awkward, because it is not clear if the W vs L match is indeed the final or semi-final.

I think this solves few problems that we experience with the current group, then single elimination setup
* every match matters
* no situation where an unfortunate matchup (either with group of doom, or matchup) can directly elimitate an otherwise very good team.
* more difficult to game and fix matches (?)

The number of matches is max 2n - 1 , so with 32 contestants that results in 63 matches, while current setup has 48 matches in group stage and then 15 in elimination stage for a total of 63 matches :).

I'm strongly arguing for double elimination, but we'll have to sit down and argue everything out after the tournament.

This.

The problem I suppose is figuring out how to schedule it across 4 weekends. But maybe not that big a deal. As long as teams don't have to play more than one match per day until the last day.

I guess draw up the double elimination bracket, and then start figuring out which days each match takes place.
